{"id":102740,"date":"2018-03-07T00:30:33","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T07:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/markshea\/?p=102740"},"modified":"2018-03-06T19:32:37","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T02:32:37","slug":"baffling-thing-brandon-vogt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/markshea\/2018\/03\/baffling-thing-brandon-vogt.html","title":{"rendered":"The baffling thing about Brandon Vogt&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u2026is how a guy as busily involved in doing good things for other people finds the time to read all the stuff he helps other people find to read:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Hey, Mark!\n<p>Quick question:<br>\n<strong><br>\nDo you want to learn philosophy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most people have never studied philosophy, but it\u2019s something they hope to do \u201csome day, at some point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Does that sound familiar??<\/p>\n<p>One of the big regrets from college was that I <span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\"><em>never<\/em><\/span> had to take a single philosophy class.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame, because philosophy is one of the most <span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\"><em>important<\/em><\/span> disciplines, maybe the <span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\"><em>most<\/em><\/span> important besides theology.<\/p>\n<p>It grounds all the sciences, economics, ethics, teaching, business\u2013they all depend on philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, after graduating, I committed to learning philosophy on my own, getting up to speed on what I should have learned college.<\/p>\n<p>I read dozens of \u00a0books, learning about important questions like:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How can I become a better and more logical thinker?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where does knowledge come from?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do I recognize bad arguments and fallacies?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What\u2019s the right way to live?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How does morality work, and what\u2019s moral?<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Does God exist, and how can we know?<\/p><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>These questions are endlessly fascinating. Philosophy matters. We should all study it because, at the end of the day, we all <em><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">have<\/span><\/em> a philosophy. It\u2019s just a question of whether it\u2019s a <em><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">good<\/span><\/em>, well-formed philosophy or a bad, thoughtless one.<\/p>\n<p>So that\u2019s why, along with a friend of mine, Matt Nelson, we\u2019ve started a <a href=\"http:\/\/brandonvogt.acemlnb.com\/lt.php?s=457219007dfefa0955477b46ecf34656&amp;i=510A1219A59A103730\" data-ac-default-color=\"1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Philosophy Reading Club<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re basically reading through the entire <strong>\u201cHistory of Philosophy\u201d<\/strong> series written by Fr. Frederick Copleston. We\u2019re reading it slowly, only about 4-5 pages per day, so it will take several months.<\/p>\n<p>But we\u2019re doing it together, in community with dozens of people online, so we can all keep each other accountable, discuss the books, philosophers, and ideas, and learn as much philosophy as we can.<\/p>\n<p>Want to join us??<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s free and easy. Here\u2019s what Dr. Peter Kreeft, philosophy professor at Boston College, said about Fr. Copleston\u2019s \u201cHistory of Philosophy\u201d series:<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">\u201cFrederick Copleston, SJ. has written the most clear and complete multi-volume history of Western philosophy available, with increasing detail as it becomes more and more contemporary.
