More penitential suggestions from Deacon Nick<\/a>, with my commentary as an ordinary lay slobovian making my way through Lent:<\/p>\n

Read the documents of Vatican II, especially\u00a0 Gaudium et Spes<\/em><\/a>. I\u2019ve been meaning to do this.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Read\u00a0The Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults<\/em><\/a>. I\u2019ve read large chunks\u2013especially the section on the creed since I\u2019m writing a book on the Creed\u2013but never the whole thing.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Sign up for adult formation classes at a local parish. No time for this.<\/strong>
\nJoin a Bible study. Nor this.\u00a0 But I\u2019m pretty sure I\u2019m reasonably well-formed, biblically speaking.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Attend Stations of the Cross at a local parish. This I have time for.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Find a spiritual director. Done<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
Read\u00a0The Imitation of Christ<\/em><\/a>. One of these days.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Listen to a free Catholic audio book from\u00a0Maria Lectrix<\/a>. Audio books are not my thing.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Read\u00a0Introduction to the Devout Life<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0One of these days.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Read a spiritual autobiography (i.e., Augustine\u2019s\u00a0Confessions<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Story of a Soul<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Journal of a Soul<\/em><\/a>), One of these days<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
Volunteer at soup kitchen or other food program. I keep meaning to do this and I keep failing to do this.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Coordinate a food drive at your parish, school or place of employment. Coordinating things is something I suck at.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Find out who in your parish is sick and offer to visit them or bring them food. Will do.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Call your local\u00a0Catholic Charities<\/a>\u00a0office and volunteer. No time for this.<\/strong><\/li>\n
Begin making visits to a nursing home. Or this<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
Help an elderly or disabled person in your neighborhood with yard work or other difficult chores. There don\u2019t seem to be any<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
Become a hospital volunteer. No time<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
Become part of a prison ministry team. Still no time<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
Coordinate a clothing drive. Believe me, nobody wants me doing this, unless they want the whole thing cocooned in administrative chaos.<\/strong><\/li>\n
