Little Green Footballs chronicles but one of the many manifestations of combox insanity as he points us to a gajillion crazies swarming in sundry comboxes<\/a> to a) celebrate in the ugliest and most repellent terms the mass murder of 16 innocent Afghanis (including several children) by an American soldier who flipped out, while b) denouncing Obama as responsible for the thing they are gleefully celebrating. <\/p>\n

The swirling vortex of unhinged emotion seems to be engendered by a toxic combination of hatred of all Muslims, a conviction that Bush\u2019s war was great until Obama took it over, and the raw pagan love of racism, brutality, and blindly lashing out.<\/p>\n

It would be one thing if these people were isolated sociopaths. It\u2019s the sheer *quantity* of the responses that I find disturbing. <\/p>\n

One finds, of course, similar things on the left (as I mentioned the other day in chronicling the festival of death and rape threats from HuffPo readers directed against a 14 year old girl for daring to have Christian views on pelvic issues).<\/p>\n

The moral seems to be that we should get down on our knees and thank the Founding Fathers for giving us an electoral college and not falling for all that Jeffersonian schmaltz about the wisdom of the voters and how pure democracy will produce a utopia of gentleman farmer saints.
