I wish we could have touched on the \u201cO\u2019Brien resignation leads naturally to questioning celibacy\u201d opener.\u00a0 My reply is three words: \u201cMary Kay LaTourneau<\/a>\u201c.\u00a0 The weird superstition that a male celibate priesthood\u00a0leads to sexual abuse is countered by the huge amount of sexual abuse in public schools. O that woman could be teachers!\u00a0 O that teachers could marry!<\/p>\n

I was glad we were able to get past Fr. Cutie\u2019s\u00a0stuff about this being purely about medieval property rights and root it in NT revelation a bit.\u00a0 (Also, I loved the host calling him on the ridiculous \u201cvow vs. promise\u201d distinction.) I wish I could have asked, \u201cSo who pays for a living wage and benefits for Father and family at St. Impecunious parish, where 1\/3 of tyhe parish tithes their dollar in the plate each week?<\/p>\n

I was surprised that Dr. Manson perceived this as a)\u00a0sinister \u201cconservatives\u201d agreeing to waive celibacy (all\u00a0Fr. Sullins and I\u00a0really did was point out that it is not universal and only a discipline, not assert that it should be abolished) and b) that she somehow formed the conclusion that this was some grand scheme to beef up Catholic ranks with renegade married Episcopalian priests in order to keep out women and homosexuals.\u00a0 I had no idea I was so devious.<\/p>\n

Anyway, as my encounters with secular media always are, this was far too brief a chance to have anything like a really sound discussion and it was scattershot and confusing for most viewers I\u2019d reckon.\u00a0 But I did the best I could.\u00a0 Thanks for your prayers!\u00a0 And thanks to HuffPo for having me on.<\/p>\n
