Our Sunday Visitor has recently sent to you a copy of my new book, The Creed in Scripture<\/em>. This is an ideal book for the Year of Faith. In fact, before his abdication, Pope Benedict encouraged all Catholics to study the Creed during the Year of Faith and was basing his talks for his Wednesday audiences on the articles of the Creed.<\/p>\n

In announcing the Year of Faith, Pope Benedict said this: \u201cNot without reason, Christians in the early centuries were required to learn\u00a0the Creed\u00a0from memory. It served them as a daily prayer not to forget the commitment they had undertaken in baptism\u2026\u00a0Parish communities are to find a way, during this Year, to make a public profession of\u00a0the Credo. We want this Year to arouse in every believer the aspiration to\u00a0profess the faith\u00a0in fullness and with renewed conviction, with confidence and hope.\u201d\u00a0(+\u00a0Pope Benedict XVI, Porta Fidei<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this new book, I show how the Scriptures form the foundation of each of the articles of both the Apostles\u2019 Creed and the Nicene Creed. Each of its thirty chapters corresponds with a biblical passage and a phrase of the Creed, leading readers to understanding and reflect on the Creed in a way that leads to deeper faith and prayer.<\/p>\n

Bishop David L. Ricken, Chair of the U.S. Bishops\u2019 Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis, published these comments in his review of the book: \u201cIn this user-friendly book, Catholic scholar Stephen Binz invites his readers to have an encounter with God through His revealed Word by approaching the text with faith, openheartedness, reverence, and expectation. The author examines in detail the Apostles\u2019 and Nicene Creed as a springboard for evangelization. Such an integrated vital approach to Bible study offers a refreshing and true path to holiness by embracing the Paschal Mystery in a new way and focusing on the very person of Jesus Christ living in His Church.\u201d<\/p>\n
