So my wife says, \u201cYou gotta see Love\u2019s Labour\u2019s Lost <\/em> streaming on Netflix.\u201d\u00a0 I say okay, so Pete and I sit down to watch it with her.<\/p>\n

It was\u2026 a trip.\u00a0 I remember when it came out and it got panned.\u00a0So I didn\u2019t bother at the time. Now that I\u2019ve seen it, I just don\u2019t understand critics some days.<\/p>\n

Kenneth Branagh decided to take a light and fluffy comedy from Shakespeare and make it\u2026 a light and fluffy musical comedy.\u00a0 So in between Will\u2019s text:<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nyou get people busting out in Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter tunes and big boffo dance numbers straight out of the heyday of the MGM musical era.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DGenbs-RTXM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n(By the way, can that Adrian Lester dance or what? Also, gotta love the \u201cHmmm. What do we do with this \u2018It kills sheep\u2019? thingie\u201d solution to this textual oddity.)<\/p>\nI dunno. Maybe some people are offended by messing with the purity of The Sacred Text. <\/p>\nMe: I don\u2019t think Shakespeare is Holy Writ and people have been editing and redacting and playing around with him for five centuries, turning Macbeth <\/em>in a western and setting Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em> at a 50s sock hop and making Romeo and Juliet <\/em>into West Side Story<\/em> and transmogrifying The Tempest <\/em>into Forbidden Planet<\/em> when they aren\u2019t turning Prospero into Prospera. Heck, Da Man even stole from himself and used lines from previous plays in later ones (both Merchant of Venice <\/em>and Hamlet <\/em>use the line \u201cWhereto serves mercy but to confront the visage of offence?\u201d). So I was completely charmed by the big splashy numbers, the goofy gee-whiz choreography that made up for lack of polish with \u201cHey! Let\u2019s do a Show!\u201d heart. They even managed to get in an Esther Williams Bathing Beauties number. With the exception of one pretty steamy dance number you might want to think twice about before letting the kids watch, the show is a treat.<\/p>\nBut then, like Cookie Monster, me not know art, but me know what me like. I thoroughly enjoyed LLL.
