I\u2019ve\u00a0been holding off remarking about this since The Boy Wbo Cried Wolf\u00a0Syndrome that is\u00a0now the congenital condition of the Thing that Used\u00a0to be Conservatism has taught me to be very cautious\u00a0before accepting This\u00a0Week\u2019s Emmanuel Hussein Goldstein\u00a0Hysteria at face value.\u00a0\u00a0Since it is a given that if Obama so much as hiccups,\u00a0Right Wing Media will freak\u00a0out\u00a0and FB will blossom with WORST. PRESIDENT. EVAR!!!! memes, it\u2019s hard to sort wheat from chaff and\u00a0know\u00a0if the thing the\u00a0fulminators are fulminating about at present is worth bother with.<\/p>\n

FWIW,\u00a0(and\u00a0I\u2019m only guessing here since I lack the omniscient mind-reading power of the\u00a0dyed in the wool Obama hater), it\u00a0looks like Obama\u00a0decided (unilaterally, as\u00a0is\u00a0His Majesty\u2019s habit, since he is so much smarter than\u00a0everybody else in the room) to take advantage of some intel, grab this guy, and do a Reagan style\u00a0\u201carms (or in this case, GITMO detainees) for hostages\u201d exchange.\u00a0 (Oddly,\u00a0the Boys\u00a0Crying Wolf never mention Reagan\u2019s Iran-Contra deals as a precedent.)\u00a0\u00a0That was stupid enough, since the message is \u201cTake more hostages\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0But in addition, whether by dumb\u00a0bad luck or some kind of misplaced zeal for showing Muslims we\u2019re nice, they managed to liberate a guy who appears to have deserted to go build an newer, purer life devoted to the Way of the Prophet. I say \u201cappears\u201d because the news on this makes up for hard facts with a lot of high decibels\u00a0 from right wing media that have a strong interest in wishing it to be true.\u00a0 After all, this story follows hot on the heels of the Obama\u2019s excecrable treatment of our vets in the VA scandal.\u00a0 So it\u2019s high stakes.\u00a0 Obama needed this rescue to look like he Cares About Troops and the Thing That Used to Be Conservatism needs this story to be a scandal so we can forget that they just used our troops as human shields by hold their benefits hostage to their warmongering.<\/p>\n

Blood-in-the-eye Obama Haters have\u00a0already tried him for treason and\u00a0are sure that this is all some kind of gigantic Muslim conspiracy.\u00a0 Much nonsense is being spewed and it\u2019s hard to parse.\u00a0 But I think at the end of the day, what this comes back to is Obama\u2019s hubris and tendency to unilateralism exploding in his\u00a0face in a particularly embarrassing way.\u00a0 He might wind up with some kind of censure (though I doubt it) but, if I know my Movement Conservatives, I think it far more likely that the shrill obsessive hysterics\u00a0they emit about this foolish move are going to\u00a0fairly quickly manage to snatch\u00a0defeat from the jaw of a brief public relations victory.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as ever, the real story is not among\u00a0these Beltway Cannibals jockeying for power as they try to eat each other.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the troops who died looking for this guy.\u00a0 As I say, unlike the combox experts who are\u00a0already calling for his execution, I think I\u2019ll wait until the military decides to try him for desertion and then wait even longer to see if\u00a0they find him guilty.\u00a0 I know that\u2019s old-fashioned in this new age of lawless bloodthirsty\u00a0\u201cconservatism\u201d, but I think that a unilateral President is bad enough.\u00a0 A unilateral public (also known as a mob) is even worse.\u00a0 I say,\u00a0investigate, try, and, if necessary, punish him in court, not in the press.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
