\nGregory, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to an-Nasir, king of the province\u00a0of Mauretania Sitifensis in Africa. ,<\/p>\n

Your highness has this year sent a letter to us asking that we would ordain the\u00a0priest Servandus as bishop according to the Christian dispensation. Because your\u00a0request seemed right and for the best, we have been glad to do this. Moreover, you\u00a0sent presents to us and out of reverence for blessed Peter the prince of the apostles\u00a0and of love for ourself you have freed Christians who were being held captive\u00a0amongst your people;and you further promised that you would free other captives.\u00a0Indeed,God the creator of all, without whom we cannot do or even think anything\u00a0that is good, has inspired this generosity in your heart;he who enlightens every man\u00a0coming,into this world, has enlightened your mind.in\u2019this undertaking. For\u00a0Almighty God,who wills all men to be saved and none to perish, has nothing that he\u00a0more approves in us than that, after his love for him, a man should love his fellow\u00a0man, and that he should not do to another what he would not have happen to\u00a0himself. In truth, such charity both we and you owe more particularly to our own\u00a0than to the remaining peoples, for we believe in and confess, albeit in a different way,\u00a0the one God, and each day we praise and honour him as the creator of the ages and\u00a0the ruler of this world. For as the Apostle says, \u2018He is our peace,who has made both

What is more,many of the Roman nobles who are aware through us that this grace\u00a0has been granted to you by God altogether admire and voice abroad your generosity\u00a0and virtues.- Amongst them are two of our household, Alberic and Cencius, who\u00a0were brought up with us in the Roman palace from almost their very youth. They\u00a0greatly desire to be admitted to your friendship and love, and to be willingly of service to you in things that shall be pleasing to you in our parts. They are sending to\u00a0you some men of theirs in order that you may learn through them how highly they\u00a0regard you as one who is prudent and renowned,and how much they are willing and\u00a0able to be of service to you. In commending them to your excellency we wish that, for\u00a0love of ourself and in repayment of the fidelity of the aforenamed men,you would be\u00a0sure to extend to them the same charity that we desire always to extend to you and to\u00a0all your people.
