I just stumbled across something I thought you all might enjoy. It\u2019s an online gallery of cover illustrations for the War of the Worlds<\/a>!<\/p>\n
It ranges from great through so-awful-it\u2019s-hilarious and on into the I-am-astoundingly-unable-to-make-sense-of-what-my-eyes-are-experiencing spectrum. You can even view the covers categorically, using such useful sorting criteria as \u201cScreaming Humans Running Towards You,\u201d \u201cHumans Grabbed by Tentacles,\u201d \u201cTripods Blasting the HMS Thunderchild,\u201d and \u201cHuh??\u201d<\/p>\n
My personal favorite is this illustration <\/a>for a spanish-language children\u2019s edition of the book. I love the tiny cartoon children screaming in abject terror as they flee the intergalactic monstrosities pursuing them with death rays.<\/p>\n
Second place goes to this cover<\/a>, in which the martian looks like a psychedelic Japanese vampire Mickey Mouse about to chow down on humanity.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s also one with an inexplicable picture of the USS Enterprise <\/a>on it. ???<\/p>\n
