Yesterday I heard a story on NPR about the Pope\u2019s forthcoming encyclical on the environment. While the \u201cconservative\u201d who was interviewed spoke all about \u201cprudential\u201d decisions and the non-expertise of the Church on this issue, the \u201cliberal\u201d insisted that our individual decisions are ultimately social, and have impact far beyond the mere consent and free choice of the individual.<\/p>\n

How refreshing it would be to hear the \u201cconservative\u201d recognize the validity of this argument in the economic sphere, and for the \u201cliberal\u201d to realize that our sexual lives also constitute an \u201cecology,\u201d and thus that the same argument applies to marriage, abortion and sexuality. \u2013 Patrick Deneen<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
