Long-time reader of your blog here, and I\u2019m writing with a question\/favor to ask of you in your capacity as a fellow Chesterton fan and someone who seems to know his way around both literature and Christianity. \u00a0 \u00a0Briefly, I\u2019m wondering if you can think of any good fiction that that revisits some part of the story of the Fall, but from a perspective still sympathetic to God. This is for a college course I\u2019m teaching on Milton\u2019s Paradise Lost<\/em>, which I\u2019m hoping to center around the famous debate between C.S. Lewis and William Empson about whether Satan should be read as the hero or the villain of\u00a0the piece\u00a0(including some modern versions of the story that support one or the other position).<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve got Lewis\u2019s Perelandra<\/em>\u00a0on the pro-God side, but I\u2019m worried that taken solo it lacks the\u00a0oomph needed to stand up respectably to the likes of Philip Pullman and Mary Shelley in the pro-Satan camp.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>Might\u00a0you know offhand of any other good popular narratives(fiction\/film\/graphic fiction\/other\u2013 not necessarily \u201chigh literary\u201d) that, like Perelandra<\/em>, retell some part of Creation and\/or the Fall from\u00a0what we might call an orthodox or anti-Satan perspective? \u00a0 Alternatively, is there anyone else you can think of that I might consult for suggestions on this question?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
I got nuthin\u2019, unless you want to count Frankenstein<\/em> as a sort of backhanded and upside down commentary on the idea of seizing the perogatives of God. \u00a0Ironic, given who Mary Shelley was married to. \u00a0But that\u2019s pretty much it. \u00a0I was going to suggest Perelandra<\/em>, but then I kept reading your note and pffft.<\/p>\n
