He was the Irish priest who saved 6500 lives, most of them Jewish, from the Nazis.<\/a> \u00a0A clever man with a knack for cloak and dagger disguises, he earned the nickname \u201cScarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican\u201d.<\/p>\n

His arch-enemy, Herbert Kappler, was a member of the SS and Chief of Police in Rome. \u00a0He tried and failed to capture O\u2019Flaherty and was, at war\u2019s end, arrested and jailed for war crimes. \u00a0Jailed, one of his only visitors was O\u2019Flaherty. \u00a0He eventually became a Catholic.<\/p>\n
