Yesterday, EWTN aired Raymond Arroyo\u2019s interview with Donald Trump<\/a>. \u00a0In the course of it,\u00a0Trump repeated a tale has told before to sell prolifers on his \u201cconversion\u201d to a prolife position:<\/p>\n

You\u2019re very concerned about the late-term abortions. What was the moment that changed your thinking, your heart, on this?<\/em><\/p>\n

Well, there are a number of moments, but one was a couple that I know very, very well \u2014 and you had a strong pro-life [person] and you had a strong pro-choice [person], and they argued over [the pregnancy]. \u2026 The mother was pregnant. They argued over the child. One, I won\u2019t get into specifics.<\/p>\n

Sure.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

But one wanted to abort. And the other said, \u201cWe can\u2019t do that. We\u2019re not going to do that.\u201d Anyway, they had the baby. It was a long time ago. And the baby is such a magnificent person, who I know, a magnificent person. And the person that was actually pro-choice is now pro-life because of it, and it had a big effect on me. But I\u2019ve seen other examples similar to that; but I\u2019ve seen other examples, so \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Trumpian chronology is a curious thing. \u00a0This happened \u201ca long time ago\u201d. \u00a0Long enough for the baby to have grown up into a \u201cmagnificent person, who I know\u201d. \u00a0So *when* did this \u201cconversion\u201d happen?<\/p>\n

Well,\u00a0we also know that as recently as March, Trump was saying that he was \u201cjust doing what is right\u201d to say<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, Planned Parenthood has done very good work for many, many \u2014 for millions of women,\u201d Trump said in a news conference Tuesday night. \u201cAnd I\u2019ll say it, and I know a lot of the so-called conservatives, they say that\u2019s really \u2026 cause I\u2019m a conservative, but I\u2019m a common-sense conservative.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And in April\u2013of this year\u2013he was saying \u201cthe laws are set, we have to leave it that way\u201d<\/a> concerning Roe<\/em>. \u00a0(He also refused to answer the question of whether this champion of the unborn and women had ever personally paid for abortions for his sexual conquests<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

After that, we hear nothing but silence from him, right up to the Convention, when he delivers\u2026 more silence. \u00a0For the first time in decades, he becomes the first GOP candidate to refuse to so much as mention abortion in his stemwinder speech.<\/p>\n

To be sure, he surrounds himself with some prolife Christians who, we are assured, are \u201ccounseling\u201d him on all this. \u00a0(Note: only the prolife Christians have a moral effect on Donald Trump. \u00a0The Alt Right Racists and White Supremacists with which he also surrounds himself and whose rhetoric actually forms the backbone of his campaign and the bulk of his message have no effect on this Baby Christian who is daily growing in grace and wisdom.) And you can trust this because those prolife Christians are out in the field telling us that Trump has had this \u201cconversion\u201d at some mysterious point in time, though he almost never discusses it.<\/p>\n

So we get to the debates. \u00a0Hillary comes through loud and clear on abortion and the Supreme Court in the second debate. \u00a0She says all the stuff you knew she\u2019d say about preserving Roe<\/em>, etc. \u00a0Surely, Donald Trump, passionate prolife convert, will speak out against Roe<\/em> now.<\/p>\n

But no, he says not a word except about the Court and the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n

On to the third debate, where he is asked point blank, three times, if he wants to overturn Roe and three times refuses to give a straight answer to that question. \u00a0Feel the passion of the zealous convert!:<\/p>\n

Wallace<\/b>: Well, let\u2019s pick up on another issue which divides you, and the justices that, whoever ends up winning this election appoints, could have a dramatic effect there. That\u2019s the issue of abortion. Mr. Trump, you\u2019re pro-life. And I want to ask you specifically. Do you want the court, including the justices that you will name, to overturn Roe v. Wade, which includes, in fact, states a woman\u2019s right to abortion.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/b>: Well, if that would happen, because I am pro-life and I will be appointing pro-life judges, I would think that would go back to the individual states.<\/p>\n

Wallace<\/b>: I\u2019m asking you specifically would you-<\/p>\n

Trump<\/b>: If they overturned it, it would go back to the states.<\/p>\n

Wallace<\/b>: But what I\u2019m asking you, do you want to see the court overturn it? You just said you want to see the court protect the second amendment, do you want to see the court overturn-<\/p>\n

Trump<\/b>: If we put another two or perhaps three justices on, that is really what will happen. That will happen automatically in my opinion. Because I am putting pro-life justices on the court. I will say this. It will go back to the states and the states will then make a determination.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So just when did Trump \u201cconvert\u201d to a prolife position? \u00a0Because to any person of common sense it is obvious that he would be delighted if he never had to think or talk about abortion ever again. \u00a0And it looks like even his tepid \u201cdefense\u201d of a prolife position is so massively tone deaf that he would not understand the terms \u201csanctity of human life\u201d or \u201cintrinsic value of the human person\u201d or \u201cmade in the image and likeness of God\u201d if his life depended on it. \u00a0His very story of \u201cconversion\u201d makes clear that this (likely fictitious) baby who grew up to be a \u201cmagnificent person\u201d has a right to live entirely predicated on the fact that they grew up to be a magnificent person and not a \u201closer\u201d.<\/p>\n

In short, sticking Trump up on a stage as some kind of champion of the prolife position is as painfully unbelievable as expecting Nixon to disco.<\/p>\n

But, it ran on EWTN so now we are all supposed to believe it and take it seriously. \u00a0And if you don\u2019t, Good Catholics have their marching orders from the Dear Leader himself:<\/p>\n

Frankly, if any Catholic votes for Hillary Clinton, you know, I would say, if I were a Catholic, I wouldn\u2019t be talking to them anymore.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
