Jerry Falwell Jr. \u2014 a Baptist and leader of the religious right who was one of Trump\u2019s chief promoters \u2014 delivered a pithy and pointed critique of the pontiff.<\/p>\n

\u201cPope Francis lost all credibility when he failed to call out US Left for policies that impoverished inner cities 4 Dem political gain,\u201d Falwell tweeted.<\/p>\n

The tweet \u2014 directed at the Pope\u2019s Twitter account, @Pontifex<\/a> \u2014 was almost immediately deleted. Reached by phone Tuesday by RNS, the Liberty University president said his wife, Becki, and 16-year-old daughter, Caroline, had made him take it down, something he said happens \u201cevery now and then.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he stood by the tweet and said it was prompted by the Pope\u2019s comments in an interview<\/a> published Friday by Italian daily La Repubblica<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Asked what he thought about the president-elect, Francis said: \u201cI do not judge people or politicians. I only want to understand what suffering their behavior causes to the poor and the excluded.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As the US goes mad, I find myself more and more grateful for the Holy Father. When he dies, I hope he is given the title Pope St. Francis the Unavoidable. I mean that with the highest sense of praise possible. He fulfills Chesterton\u2019s words: \u201cThe Saint is a medicine because he is an antidote. Indeed that is why the saint is often a martyr; he is mistaken for a poison because he is an antidote.\u201d<\/p>\n
