Sister Mary Luke Tobin (May 16<\/a>, 1908<\/a> \u2013 August 24<\/a>, 2006<\/a>) was an American Roman Catholic nun and one of only 15 women auditors invited to the Second Vatican Council<\/a>, and the only American<\/a> woman of the three women religious permitted to participate on the Council\u2019s planning commissions. Christened as Ruth Marie Tobin, she attended public schools in Denver and traveled to Nevada and California with her parents and older brother. She managed a dance school while attending Loretto Heights College<\/a> in Denver. <\/a>Sister Tobin was a former superior general of the Sisters of Loretto<\/a>. She had been president of the order from 1958 to 1970. When she was invited to Rome, she was president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious<\/a>. She did much of her work in her native Denver<\/a> but traveled the world on missions for peace, including visits to Saigon<\/a>, Paris<\/a>, El Salvador<\/a> and Northern Ireland<\/a>. <\/a>While living at the Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx, Kentucky<\/a>, she became friends with Trappist monk Thomas Merton<\/a>. Merton shared with her works he was not allowed to publish. After Merton\u2019s death in 1968 she co-founded the International Thomas Merton Society<\/a> and also established the Thomas Merton Center for Creative Exchange in Denver in 1979 where Merton\u2019s spirituality and writings came to be known by many. She gave Merton retreats and cofounded a Buddhist-Christian dialogue\/meditation group in Denver. Tobin invited such luminaries as Fr. Edward Schillebeeckx<\/a> and Fr. Bernard H\u00e4ring<\/a> to lecture at Loretto. She was an actress in the TV special<\/a>: Merton: A Film Biography of Thomas Merton. <\/a>The diminutive nun supported women\u2019s ordination to the priesthood, opposed nuclear proliferation, supported the United Farm Workers<\/a> and took on the Blue Diamond Coal Company by using Loretto\u2019s shares to challenge the firm\u2019s practices and took part in nonviolent actions at Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, the U.S. Air Force Academy and Martin-Marietta in Colorado.
