Born in <a title=\"Bolsward\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bolsward\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bolsward<\/a>, he was baptized Anno Sjoerd. He joined the Carmelites at eighteen, and wasgiven the religious name Titus. Ordained in 1905, he received a doctorate in 1909. He then taught in various schools in the Netherlands. He translated the works of <a title=\"Teresa of \u00c1vila\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teresa_of_%C3%81vila\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Saint Teresa of \u00c1vila<\/a> into Dutch. One of the founders of the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now <a title=\"Radboud University\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radboud_University\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Radboud University<\/a>), he taught philosophy and the history of mysticism. He later served as Rector. Fr. Brandsma also worked as a journalist and was the ecclesiastical adviser to Catholic journalists by 1935. It was his fight against the spread of Nazi ideology and for educational and press freedom that brought him to the attention of the Nazis. He was arrested in January 1942, when he tried to persuade Dutch <a title=\"Roman Catholic\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Catholic\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Catholic<\/a> newspapers not to print Nazi propaganda (as was required by law of the Nazi German occupiers). Brandsma was transferred in February 1942 to the <a title=\"Concentration camp\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concentration_camp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">concentration camp<\/a> <a title=\"Dachau concentration camp\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dachau_concentration_camp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dachau<\/a> on <a title=\"June 13\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/June_13\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 13<\/a>, after being held prisoner in <a title=\"Scheveningen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scheveningen\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scheveningen<\/a>, <a title=\"Amersfoort\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amersfoort\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amersfoort<\/a>, and <a title=\"Cleves\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleves\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cleves<\/a>. He died on <a title=\"July 26\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/July_26\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">July 26<\/a>, <a title=\"1942\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1942\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">1942<\/a>, by a lethal injection administered by a <a title=\"Physician\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Physician\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">doctor<\/a> of the <a title=\"Allgemeine SS\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allgemeine_SS\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Allgemeine SS<\/a>. Brandsma\u2019s documentation on <a title=\"Middle Dutch\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_Dutch\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Middle Dutch<\/a> mysticism was the basis for the current <a title=\"Titus Brandsma Institute (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Titus_Brandsma_Institute&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Titus Brandsma Institute<\/a> in <a title=\"Nijmegen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nijmegen\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nijmegen<\/a>, dedicated to the study of <a title=\"Spirituality\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spirituality\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">spirituality<\/a>. Titus Brandsma is honored as a <a title=\"Martyr\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">martyr<\/a> within the Roman Catholic Church. He was <a title=\"Beatification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beatification\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">beatified<\/a> in November 1985 by <a title=\"Pope John Paul II\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_John_Paul_II\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pope John Paul II<\/a>. His Feast Day is 27 July.
