On this day in 1822, the Feast of St. James the Greater, Bishop John Connolly of New York laid the cornerstone for
St. James Church<\/a>. St. James was the first Catholic church in Brooklyn, as well as the first on Long Island. When Brooklyn became a separate diocese in 1853, St. James was named the cathedral.
