Today marks the death of Pope Pius IX<\/a> (1792-1878), whose 32 year pontificate was the longest (tradition has it) after St. Peter. Born to a noble family, Giovanni Mastai-Ferretti was ordained in 1819. After some pastoral and diplomatic work, he was named an Archbishop in 1827. He became a Cardinal. When the arch-conservative Pope Gregory XVI<\/a> died in 1846, Mastai was seen as a compromise choice between the liberal and conservative extremists.<\/div>\n

For centuries the Italian peninsula had been divided into several kingdoms, the Papal States among them. Local support for national unification was growing. At first the new pope seemed favorable to it, but when revolutions rocked Italy (and Europe) in 1848, he voiced his opposition. For Pius, the papacy\u2019s political independence was necessary for its spiritual independence. Otherwise it would become the tool of local rulers, which happened too many times in the past.\n

Pius was forced to flee Rome in 1848, but he returned with the help of French troops. (Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the French president who became Napoleon III, was courting the Catholic vote.) For the next 20 years, the Papal States depended on foreign aide. After Italy unified in 1861, they were the last holdout. But in 1870 France withdrew its troops, and Italian troops occupied Rome, making unification an unavoidable fact. But Pius refused to accept this, declaring himself the \u201cPrisoner of the Vatican.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the papacy\u2019s political power declined, Pius strengthened his spiritual rule, and so reshaped the Church Universal. In 1854 he proclaimed<\/a> the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and in 1856 he universalized the Feast of the Sacred Heart<\/a>. The highpoint of his campaign climaxed with the declaration of papal infallibility at the First Vatican Council (1869-1870). Infallibility was a bulwark against the growing secularism threatening both Church and world. In 2000 Pius IX, the pope who called the First Vatican Council<\/a>, was beatified along with John XXIII, the pope who called the Second Vatican Council.
