Her work with the wounded during the <a title=\"American Civil War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Civil_War\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">American Civil War<\/a> and health care in general caused her to be known as \u201cthe angel of the battlefield\u201d and \u201cthe <a title=\"Florence Nightingale\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florence_Nightingale\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Florence Nightingale<\/a> of America.\u201d She was born in <a title=\"Limerick, Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Limerick,_Ireland\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Limerick, Ireland<\/a> in 1814, the daughter of William and Catherine Murphy O\u2019Connell. She emigrated to the <a title=\"United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">United States<\/a>, and attended the <a title=\"Ursuline\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ursuline\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ursuline<\/a> Academy in <a title=\"Charlestown, Massachusetts\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlestown,_Massachusetts\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Charlestown, Massachusetts<\/a>. She went through her novitiate with the American <a title=\"Sisters of Charity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sisters_of_Charity\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sisters of Charity<\/a> in St. Joseph\u2019s Valley, and took the name of Sister Anthony. She was in <a title=\"Cincinnati\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cincinnati\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cincinnati<\/a> from 1837 through 1852, when she was placed in charge of St. John\u2019s Hotel for Invalids, a new hospital. She was an active nurse during the Civil War, serving at <a title=\"Camp Dennison\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camp_Dennison\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Camp Dennison<\/a>, and the battlefields of <a title=\"Winchester, Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winchester,_Virginia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Winchester, Virginia<\/a>, the <a title=\"Cumberland Gap, Tennessee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumberland_Gap,_Tennessee\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cumberland Gap, Tennessee<\/a>, <a title=\"Richmond, Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richmond,_Virginia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Richmond, Virginia<\/a>, <a title=\"Nashville, Tennessee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nashville,_Tennessee\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nashville, Tennessee<\/a>, <a title=\"Gallipolis, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gallipolis,_Ohio\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gallipolis, Ohio<\/a>, <a title=\"Culpeper, Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Culpeper,_Virginia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Culpeper Court House, Virginia<\/a>, <a title=\"Murfreesboro, Tennessee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Murfreesboro,_Tennessee\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Murfreesboro, Tennessee<\/a>, <a title=\"Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pittsburg_Landing,_Tennessee\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee<\/a>, and <a title=\"Lynchburg, Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lynchburg,_Virginia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lynchburg, Virginia<\/a>. In recognition of her service during the Civil War, in 1873, two citizens of Cincinnati, neither of them Catholics, purchased the United States Marine Hospital for her under the direction of her order, with the intention that the property be used as a maternity hospital. She also received recognition for her work in the <a title=\"Yellow fever\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yellow_fever\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">yellow fever<\/a> epidemic of 1877.
