Anton Martin Slom\u0161ek (26 November 1800 \u2013 24 September 1862) was a Slovene<\/a> bishop<\/a>, author<\/a>, poet<\/a>, and advocate of Slovene culture. Slom\u0161ek was born to a peasant family in the hamlet of Slom<\/a> near the village of Ponikva<\/a> in the Municipality of \u0160entjur<\/a>, Lower Styria<\/a>. He studied theology<\/a> and philosophy<\/a> before being ordained in 1824 at the seminary<\/a> in Klagenfurt<\/a>. From 1829 to 1838 Slom\u0161ek was spiritual director of the seminary of Klagenfurt. In the latter year he became the priest of Saldenhofen an der Drau<\/a>. In 1844 Slom\u0161ek moved to Sankt Andr\u00e4<\/a> and headed the school of the Diocese of Lavant<\/a>. He became a priest in Celje<\/a> in 1846, and in the same year he was ordained Bishop of Lavant<\/a>. In the following years Slom\u0161ek strove for the transfer of the See of Lavant<\/a> from Sankt Andr\u00e4<\/a> in eastern Carinthia<\/a> to Maribor<\/a> in Lower Styria, which he achieved in 1859. He strove for religious education and education in Slovenian<\/a>, writing numerous books on the matter. Slom\u0161ek was considered an excellent preacher and a tireless and modest priest. He also wrote songs, some of which, such as the toast \u201cEn hrib\u010dek bom kupil\u201d (I Will Buy a Small Hill) have achieved widespread popularity and are still sung today. Together with Andrej Einspieler<\/a> and Anton Jane\u017ei\u010d<\/a>, Slom\u0161ek was the co-founder of the Hermagoras Society, the oldest Slovene publishing house. Slom\u0161ek died in Maribor in 1862. In 1996, Slom\u0161ek was described as a \u201cVenerable Servant of God\u201d by Pope John Paul II<\/a>. On 19 September 1999, John Paul II announced Slom\u0161ek\u2019s beatification<\/a> in Maribor, instead of Rome<\/a>, as is the usual custom.<\/div>\n
