He is often credited as \u201cThe Father of the American Navy\u201d. Barry was born in Tacumshane, <a title=\"County Wexford\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_Wexford\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">County Wexford<\/a>, <a title=\"Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ireland<\/a> and appointed a Captain in the <a title=\"Continental Navy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Navy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Continental Navy<\/a> on December 7, 1775. On October 31, 1767, Barry married Mary Cleary, who died in 1774. On July 7, 1777, he married <a class=\"new decorated-link\" title=\"Sarah Austin Barry (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Sarah_Austin_Barry&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sarah Austin<\/a>, daughter of Samuel Austin and Sarah Keen of <a title=\"New Jersey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Jersey\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New Jersey<\/a>. Barry had no children, but he helped raise <a title=\"Patrick Hayes (mariner)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_Hayes_(mariner)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Patrick<\/a> and Michael Hayes, children of his sister, Eleanor, and her husband, Thomas Hayes, who both died in the 1780s. Barry died at Strawberry Hill, in present-day <a title=\"Philadelphia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Philadelphia<\/a> on September 13, 1803, and was buried in the graveyard of Old St. Mary\u2019s Roman Catholic Church in <a title=\"Center City, Philadelphia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_City,_Philadelphia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Center City, Philadelphia<\/a>. He commanded <a title=\"USS Lexington (1776)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Lexington_(1776)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lexington<\/a>, <a title=\"USS Raleigh (1776)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Raleigh_(1776)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Raleigh<\/a>, and <a title=\"USS Alliance (1778)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Alliance_(1778)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alliance<\/a>. He and his crew of the Alliance fought and won the final naval battle of the <a title=\"American Revolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Revolution\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">American Revolution<\/a> off the coast of <a title=\"Cape Canaveral\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Canaveral\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cape Canaveral<\/a> on March 10, 1783. He was seriously wounded on May 29, 1781, while in command of Alliance during her capture of <a class=\"new decorated-link\" title=\"HMS Atalanta (1775) (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=HMS_Atalanta_(1775)&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">HMS Atalanta<\/a> and <a title=\"HMS Trepassey (1779)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HMS_Trepassey_(1779)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Trepassey<\/a>. Barry was successful in suppressing three <a title=\"Mutiny\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mutiny\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mutinies<\/a> during his career as an officer in the Continental Navy. He was still in command of the Alliance when it participated in the last battle of the Revolutionary War.Appointed senior captain upon the establishment of the U.S. Navy, he commanded the <a title=\"Frigate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frigate\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">frigate<\/a> <a title=\"USS United States (1797)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_United_States_(1797)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">United States<\/a> in the <a title=\"Quasi-War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quasi-War\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Quasi-War<\/a> with <a title=\"France\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">France<\/a>. Barry authored a Signal Book published in 1780 to improve communications at sea among vessels traveling in formation. On February 22, 1797, he was issued Commission Number 1 by President George Washington, backdated to June 4, 1794.
