Bernard James Sheil (February 18<\/a>, 1888<\/a> \u2013 September 13<\/a>, 1969<\/a>) was an Auxiliary Roman Catholic<\/a> Bishop<\/a> of Chicago<\/a>. Born and raised in Chicago, Sheil was ordained a priest on May 3<\/a>, 1910<\/a>. He was named auxiliary Bishop of Chicago in 1928, a post he held for over forty years. As bishop he was give the titular see<\/a> of Pegae. On June 5<\/a>, 1959<\/a> he was made an Archbishop<\/a> being named titular Archbishop of Selge. Sheil was \u201coutspoken advocate of social justice in the underprivileged and marginalized sectors of the community.\u201d His pro-labor<\/a> stance lead him to endorse some controversial strikes<\/a>. Bishop Sheil was founder of Catholic Youth Organization<\/a> (CYO). According to a history of Catholic Scouting<\/a>, while Cardinal Mundelein<\/a> of had \u201cexplored the possibility of Scouting for his \u2018street kiddies,'\u201d it was not until his newly consecrated auxiliary, Bishop Bernard J. Sheil took the reins, that Catholic Scouting flourished in Chicago.\u201d He was awarded the Silver Buffalo Award<\/a> by the Boy Scouts of America<\/a> in 1942. The Sheil School of Social Studies, which focused on adult education, opened at CYO headquarters in 1943. In eleven years of operation, it enrolled 20,000 students.
