\nI had the honor of hearing Luci Shaw<\/a> and Jeanne Murray Walker<\/a> discuss \u201cAmbition\u201d together a week ago Thursday. What a gift it was to be at the Festival of Faith and Writing and hear two stunning poets discuss the writing life in the context of faith, to listen to Luci Shaw speak about how she investigates her own inner motivations and questions her need for affirmation. Such honesty and humility is so rare in the poetry world and I soaked their words up with all my heart.<\/p>\n

I should also add that Luci Shaw is just about the cutest thing I\u2019ve ever seen. \u00a0But, alas, that\u2019s not a good reason to like a poet. This, however, is:
\n<\/p>\n

The Simple Dark<\/h3>\n

by Luci Shaw<\/p>\n

Black birds slice their evening patterns\u2014
\nlong curves in the sky. Everything
\nis drawing down into shade.
\nBut the dark, which is at first so simple
\nis not simple. Away from the farmhouse
\nwith is slits of yellow, the monochrome
\ndevelops like a print in the chemical bath.<\/p>\n

The unbroken velvet swims
\nwith complications so subtle that
\nseeing and hearing must take their time
\nto know. The shadow purples,
\nthe dusk intricate with crickets. The sky
\ninfested with pricks of light.
\nMy whole body an ear, an eye.
\n<\/p>\n
