Descending Theology: The Garden<\/h3>\n

We know he was a man because, once doomed,
\nhe begged for reprieve. See him
\ngrieving on his rock under olive trees,
\nhis companions asleep
\non the hard ground around him
\nwrapped in old hides.
\nNot one stayed awake as he\u2019d asked.
\nThat went through him like a sword.
\nHe wished with all his being to stay
\nbut gave up
\nbargaining at the sky. He knew
\nit was all mercy anyhow,
\nunearned as breath. The Father couldn\u2019t intervene,
\nthough that gaze was never
\nnot rapt, a mantle around him. This
\nwas our doing, our death.
\nThe dark prince had poured the vial of poison
\ninto the betrayer\u2019s ear,
\nand it was done. Around the oasis where Jesus wept,
\nthe cracked earth radiated out for miles.
\nIn the green center, Jesus prayed for the pardon
\nof Judas, who was approaching
\nwith soldiers, glancing up\u2013as Christ was\u2013into
\nthe punctured sky till his neck bones
\nached. Here is his tear-riven face come
\nto press a kiss on his brother.<\/p>\n
