See him<br>\ngrieving on his rock under olive trees,<br>\nhis companions asleep<br>\non the hard ground around him<br>\nwrapped in old hides.<br>\nNot one stayed awake as he\u2019d asked.<br>\nThat went through him like a sword.<br>\nHe wished with all his being to stay<br>\nbut gave up<br>\nbargaining at the sky. He knew<br>\nit was all mercy anyhow,<br>\nunearned as breath. The Father couldn\u2019t intervene,<br>\nthough that gaze was never<br>\nnot rapt, a mantle around him. This<br>\nwas our doing, our death.<br>\nThe dark prince had poured the vial of poison<br>\ninto the betrayer\u2019s ear,<br>\nand it was done. Around the oasis where Jesus wept,<br>\nthe cracked earth radiated out for miles.<br>\nIn the green center, Jesus prayed for the pardon<br>\nof Judas, who was approaching<br>\nwith soldiers, glancing up\u2013as Christ was\u2013into<br>\nthe punctured sky till his neck bones<br>\nached.
