\"The<\/a>One of the speakers at the recent Children, Youth, and a New Kind of Christianity<\/a> conference \u2014 and one who I\u2019m looking forward to seeing at Wild Goose Festival<\/a> this coming week \u2014 was Dori Baker, who also happens to work for the Fund for Theological Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dori has written a fabulous new book called The Barefoot Way<\/em><\/a> that invites youth and young adults (and the people who walk with them) to \u201cspend 10 minutes a day [for 21 days] tending your soul.\u201d In that sense, it\u2019s a 21-day devotional that creates space for readers to kick off their shoes and stand on the holy ground of personal stories \u2014 other people\u2019s stories and their own stories.<\/p>\n

One of my favorite parts of this little book is the notion of \u201cthe larger story\u201d of our lives being about our vocation or calling. Dori uses the word vocation intentionally, and she defines it as \u201cthe cluster of activities that give one\u2019s life purpose and meaning.\u201d She also says, \u201cVocation is the practice through which people offer their lives in response to God\u2019s call, amid a world in need.\u201d So vocation is about our actions, how we engage God\u2019s mission in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Vocation is] finding the purpose for your life that is part of the purposes of God.\u201d \u2014Walter Brueggemann<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I really think it\u2019d be helpful if more of us would use this language of vocation<\/em> for the personal (the individual) and reserve the language of mission<\/em> for God<\/a> (the universal). Clearly the two intersect in important ways, but the larger circle is always God\u2019s, not ours. As Dori writes, \u201c[Our<\/em>] dreams overlap with God\u2019s<\/em> dream for the world. Out of such reflection will flow action \u2014 works of justice, care, and compassion that just might renew the church and change the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
