{"id":381,"date":"2014-03-31T22:11:34","date_gmt":"2014-03-31T22:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/missionwork\/?p=199"},"modified":"2014-03-31T22:11:34","modified_gmt":"2014-03-31T22:11:34","slug":"a-chicago-chicken-shops-statement-of-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/missionwork\/2014\/03\/a-chicago-chicken-shops-statement-of-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"A Chicago chicken shop&#8217;s statement of faith"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/436\/2014\/03\/leghornchicken1.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-205\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/436\/2014\/03\/leghornchicken1-403x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"717\"><\/a>By Joseph Sunde<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leghornchicken.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Leghorn Chicken<\/a>, a \u201csocially conscious chicken shop\u201d in Chicago, makes it quite clear that they intend to be,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.acton.org\/archives\/66416-religious-liberty-business-culture-making.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">as one might put it<\/a>, a\u00a0<em>culture-making enterprise<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Behold their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.leghornchicken.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement of faith<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremyrmann\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">hat tip<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to Jeremy Mann for pointing it out).<\/p>\n<p>Such an attitude, worldview, and moral orientation isn\u2019t all that appealing to someone such as myself, particularly when paired with the lovely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-frc3\/t1\/1922360_569809799782551_1734740596_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">parental advisory sign<\/a>\u00a0located at the counter. Yet I feel no inclination to enlist the muscle of the magistrates to manipulate them toward watering things down. I can consume their chicken blindly (not advisable), take my business elsewhere, or start a delicious chicken shop of my own.<\/p>\n<p>Respond to the market signal with your own market signal. Heed your\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.acton.org\/archives\/66201-cakes-conscience-christian-stewardship.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">conscience<\/a>.\u00a0Shape and create the culture. Bear witness to the Truth. Etc.<\/p>\n<p>Yet for those like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.acton.org\/archives\/65998-bakers-beliefs-kirsten-powers-faith-work-disconnect.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kirsten Powers<\/a>, these folks should simply subdue their strident beliefs and get back to plain-old materialistic business. \u201cMost people just want to eat a chicken sandwich,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2014\/02\/18\/gays-lesbians-kansas-bill-religious-freedom-christians-column\/5588643\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">she might say<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not clear why some chicken shops are so confused about their role here.\u201d Or,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.redstate.com\/2014\/02\/18\/andy-stanley-andystanley-seemingly-thinks-jesus-would-turn-water-to-wine-for-a-gay-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">as Andy Stanley might put it<\/a>, \u201cleave gay rights out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I bring this up simply to re-affirm a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.acton.org\/archives\/66416-religious-liberty-business-culture-making.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">point I\u2019ve already made<\/a>: businesses are culture-making enterprises, whether\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0or <em>we<\/em>\u00a0like it or not. When we detest or disagree with particular cultural outputs of particular cultural enterprises, we should respond with healthy Christian output, not systemic strong-arming and stifling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/436\/2014\/03\/chicken-e1395182418787.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-200\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/436\/2014\/03\/chicken-e1395182418787-300x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"><\/a>This means maximizing the freedom to shape culture and maximizing it for all.
