The caption read: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindanews.com\/top-stories\/2012\/05\/11\/media-groups-ask-pdi-to-apologize-for-%E2%80%9Csecurity-risk%E2%80%99-caption\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Security Risk?<\/a>\u201d The newspaper has\u00a0since\u00a0apologised for this rather insensitive captioning.<\/p>\n<p>Egyptian women keep <a href=\"http:\/\/womensenews.org\/story\/equalitywomen%E2%80%99s-rights\/120510\/egypts-women-keep-showing-power-in-protest\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">showing their power by participating in pro-democracy rallies<\/a> in Egypt, even though it still is considered very dangerous to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The<em> UNHCR<\/em> website features the story of Rozeya, a young Muslim woman from northern Burma\/Myanmar, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/4facd71b9.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">battled her conservative society, poverty, and skeptical teachers to get an education<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For a report on Swedish television, two women visited ten mosques in Sweden\u00a0with questions concerning spousal abuse and polygamy, and six out of the ten mosques <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/40866\/20120516\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">advised the women <em>not<\/em> to report their abusive, polygamous husbands to the police<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Somali draft law includes a condition that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/detail\/2012\/05\/14\/241195\/somali-women-to-be-given-role-in-affairs\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">30 percent of the seats of the parliament should be reserved for women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Belgium court opened the case of the <a href=\"http:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/articles\/2012\/05\/14\/214122.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">death by exorcism case of a young Muslim woman<\/a>, who was deceived into believing that she could not have children because she was possessed.<\/p>\n<p>Shakila Naderi is\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trust.org\/alertnet\/news\/refile-afghan-woman-pushes-for-rights-from-behind-the-wheel\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">female driving instructor in Afghanistan<\/a>, where many girls and women\u00a0are prevented from driving by\u00a0their families, and female\u00a0illiteracy is\u00a0the norm.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudi king <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2012\/05\/201251244624480494\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">fired an adviser over his comments on gender<\/a>, which provoked an outcry in the Saudi press.<\/p>\n<p>After last week\u2019s election, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/Africa\/News\/Algerian-women-claw-their-way-into-parly-20120516\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Algerian women will now take almost a third of the seats in the national assembly<\/a>. Even though this is good news, critics are worried that many of the women elected do not have the experience to deal with the challenges that come with a public position, especially because\u00a0they are women.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Jakarta Globe<\/em> features a piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartaglobe.com\/lifeandtimes\/pushing-for-womens-progress\/517652#Scene_1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Indonesian women\u2019s rights activist Yuniyanti Chuzaifah<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s female football\/soccer fans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-18071669\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">dream of returning to the stadium to watch live matches<\/a>, from which they are currently banned. Watching the legs of strange men is deemed to be un-Islamic, according to some scholars.<\/p>\n<p>Germany has <a href=\"http:\/\/dailytrust.com.ng\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=162265:kano-kidnap-germany-frees-jailed-muslim-woman&amp;catid=1:news&amp;Itemid=2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">released a Muslim woman from jail to fulfill a condition<\/a> set by the\u00a0kidnappers of a German construction worker in Kano, Nigeria. The woman was jailed for aiding terrorists.<\/p>\n<p><em>Al-Jazeera\u2019s <\/em>People &amp; Power featured an edition on young Afghan female activists on its website. The film has been taken down from the website, due to safety concerns for one of the main characters, but a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/programmes\/peopleandpower\/2012\/05\/2012597434870372.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">description and some background on the film is still available<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Niger has the highest birthrate on the planet, 7.5 children per average Nigerien woman.\u00a0 Given that Niger is one of the least developed countries of the world, and facing a hunger crisis,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/breakingnews\/more-mouths-but--less-to-feed-them-151493155.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> some families are now considering birth control<\/a>, which was not considered an option before in the Niger\u2019s conservative Muslim society.<\/p>\n<p>A young Moroccan girl has been assaulted in Rabat, Morocco, by people described to be Salafists, <a href=\"http:\/\/magharebia.com\/cocoon\/awi\/xhtml1\/en_GB\/features\/awi\/features\/2012\/05\/11\/feature-02\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">because she was wearing a short dress<\/a>, which was considered to be too revealing. This event sparked an intense debate among different groups on personal freedoms in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Abortions are illegal in Oman, but\u00a0for families with an unmarried girl who is pregnant, it is often perceived to be the only\u00a0option.\u00a0Not only is it\u00a0a very\u00a0expensive practice, but those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofoman.com\/innercat.aspx?detail=4784\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">girls who survive the abortion\u00a0without complications are considered to be lucky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An Indian Muslim woman, Sabina, who <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/2012-05-12\/lucknow\/31679350_1_sabina-imrana-charthawal\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">accused her father-in-law of raping her, has gone missing<\/a>. The case is very similar to that of another woman of the same village, Imrana, who accused her father-in-law too of rape, and who, after the intervention of Muslim clerics, got her marriage annulled.<\/p>\n<p>The northern Nigerian state-sponsored\u00a0matchmaking programme focusing on widows and divorcees has been successful: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-18072118\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a hundred couples got married during a mass wedding<\/a>, the first mass wedding, with many planned\u00a0to follow.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty years after the war in Bosnia, there are still refugees living in makeshift camps that lack basic necessities, such as running water.
