{"id":12420,"date":"2013-01-25T02:00:26","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T06:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/mmw\/?p=12420"},"modified":"2013-01-25T11:58:57","modified_gmt":"2013-01-25T15:58:57","slug":"friday-links-january-25-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/mmw\/2013\/01\/friday-links-january-25-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Links | January 25, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The Syrian regime under leadership of Bashar al Assad is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/assads-lionesses-the-female-last-line-in-the-battle-for-syria-8462221.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">actively recruiting female soldiers<\/a> to be deployed in checkpoints etc., so that more male soldiers can be deployed at the front lines.<\/p>\n<p>The statement by the Indonesian Ulema Council that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radioaustralia.net.au\/international\/radio\/program\/asia-pacific\/debate-in-indonesia-over-un-plan-to-ban-female-circumcision\/1077806\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">female circumcision is a constitutional right<\/a> has sparked a huge debate in the country.\u00a0Women\u2019s rights groups on the other hand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartaglobe.com\/home\/rights-groups-push-for-female-circumcision-ban\/566823#Scene_1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">push for a ban<\/a>, calling the practice gender discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Bassima Hakkaoui, Morocco\u2019s only female minister, says that\u00a0the fact that she\u00a0wears the <a href=\"http:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/articles\/2013\/01\/19\/261297.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hijab has made her a media target<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Senegal an approx. 12 percent of the female population uses contraceptives, and despite the government\u2019s attempt to curb the baby boom, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2013\/01\/senegal-seeks-to-curb-the-baby-boom\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">family planning remains a taboo<\/a> for the majority of the population.<\/p>\n<p>According to imam Mohammed Elsadi, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofmalta.com\/articles\/view\/20130121\/local\/-Muslim-women-should-be-able-to-wear-hijab-at-work-.454136\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Maltese Muslim women would be more encouraged to find employment<\/a>, if they would be assured by the government that they could wear the hijab to work.<\/p>\n<p>Ola Thiabat, who was campaining for a seat in Jordanian parliament, says that <a href=\"http:\/\/jordantimes.com\/seeking-a-voice-woman-candidate-punished-with-divorce\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">her husband\u2019s family forced him to divorce her just after she started her campaign<\/a>. Image by REUTERS\/Eric Gaillard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The divorce rate in the Dutch Moroccan community is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rnw.nl\/english\/article\/marry-haste-repent-leisure-young-dutch-moroccans\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on the rise<\/a>; cultural differences between partners from \u201cback home\u201d and those in The Netherlands are often cited as an important reason behind the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Bahraini princess Noura Bint Ebrahim al-Khalifa,\u00a0is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-21149779\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">facing multiple torture charges<\/a> for torturing at least three individuals in detention. She denies the charges.<\/p>\n<p>A report by the <em>International Labor Organization<\/em> and <em>Tufts University<\/em> has found that female workers in Indonesia continue to face social, cultural, religious and economic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartaglobe.com\/news\/study-women-still-lack-equality-in-employment\/566008#Scene_1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">barriers to equal treatment in employment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The government of Morocco has said that it is planning to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/africa\/2013\/01\/2013123225637555571.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">change the current \u201crape law\u201d<\/a>, which allows rapists to marry their victims to avoid further charges.<\/p>\n<p>A South African school has denied entry to two students, a boy and a girl, for <a href=\"http:\/\/mg.co.za\/article\/2013-01-23-high-school-denies-siblings-entry-for-wearing-head-dress\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wearing Muslim head gear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The increasing female labor migration in Kyrgyzstan, and already high male labor migration has resulted in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurasianet.org\/node\/66436\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">increasing number of \u201csocial orphans<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rafeena Nafeek, the mother of Rizana Nafeek, who was beheaded in Saudi Arabia for allegedly killing an infant, says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-21167277\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">she forgives those responsible for her daughter\u2019s death<\/a>. She has also called on other young Sri Lankan girls and their families not to go abroad for work, and rather focus on education.<\/p>\n<p>Malika Moussa and Fatima Tirmanini are Syrian refugees living in a camp in Turkey, where they are candidates to be <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.aljazeera.com\/blog\/middle-east\/women-playing-greater-role-refugee-camps\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">elected in the camp\u2019s administrative council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report, more Yemeni women are getting married to foreign men. The main reason for this is\u00a0thought to be the <a href=\"http:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/articles\/2013\/01\/22\/261850.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">lower dowries men have to pay for Yemeni brides<\/a>, compared to other women in the region.<\/p>\n<p>A report on the Somali community in Minnesota, USA, reports a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postbulletin.com\/news\/local\/report-studies-gap-between-somali-women-and-doctors\/article_0ef5006f-1999-5476-a635-a1b4a087c67b.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">cultural barrier between Somalis and their health care providers<\/a>, especially those concerned with family planning and prenatal care.<\/p>\n<p>Kholoud Sukkarieh and Nidal Darwish are a Lebanese couple of newlyweds, who defied the country\u2019s ban on civil unions and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5gmQoYaKiVX8F9hfvPCCfdDJzoA7g?docId=CNG.50cff07a23f2e9de546f36c7da7f4182.1f1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">got married in a civil union<\/a>. The couple are both from different Islamic sects and their decision has sparked a huge debate in a multi-faith country.<\/p>\n<p>The exact number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2013\/01\/law-makes-it-honourable-to-kill\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">honour killings in the West Bank is unclear<\/a>, but it is certainly higher than the 29 women who were known to be\u00a0murdered between 2007 and 2010.
