{"id":2249,"date":"2009-01-01T00:05:52","date_gmt":"2009-01-01T08:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/muslimahmediawatch.org\/?p=2249"},"modified":"2011-12-08T23:33:48","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T03:33:48","slug":"in-gaza-its-911-every-hour-every-minute-everywhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/mmw\/2009\/01\/in-gaza-its-911-every-hour-every-minute-everywhere\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;In Gaza, It&#8217;s 9\/11 every hour, every minute, everywhere.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Like a lot of people, I\u2019ve spent the past couple of days glued to my TV set and the papers, monitoring the horrible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/middle_east\/article5420288.ece\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">situation in the Gaza strip<\/a>, and the Arab world\u2019s increasing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandmonkey.org\/2008\/12\/30\/blame-egypt-all-the-cool-kids-are-doing-it1\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">disenchantment with Egypt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, according to the UN, at least 373 Palestinians have been killed and 1,720 are injured. Of those killed, approximately 1\/3 were women and children. In terms of civilian casualties, some analysts have called this the worst attack since the 1967 war.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(\u201cCounting makes it\u2019s easier,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2008\/dec\/30\/gaza\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">says<\/a> Palestinian journalist Laila El-Haddad. \u201cSystemising the assaults makes them easier to deal with. More remote\u201d).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Vittorio Arrigoni, an Italian human rights activist in Gaza <a href=\"http:\/\/globalvoicesonline.org\/2008\/12\/30\/palestine-in-gaza-its-911-every-hour\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">tells us<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Gaza, it\u2019s 9\/11 every hour, every minute, everywhere, and tomorrow is always a new day of mourning. [\u2026] It is now 60 hours that Gazans\u2019 eyes, like mine, haven\u2019t closed for some sleep. Dozens are missing, in the hospitals there are desperate women looking for their husbands, their sons, for two days, often in vain. It\u2019s a macabre sight at the morgue. A nurse told me that after hours of searching amongst the pieces of the bodies at the morgue, a Palestinian woman recognized her husband from an amputated hand. That\u2019s all that remained of her husband, with his wedding ring still on [\u2026]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the Israeli side, four people have been killed.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not going to go into who is to blame, what this means, etc,, since that\u2019s not the purpose of this blog.<\/p>\n<p>I will, however, give you a brief impression of how Palestinian Muslim women are being represented on Arab TV, making it clear that the Arabic press is not only biased, but doesn\u2019t exactly try its best to be objective. So over here, you will hear nothing about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/home.php#\/video\/video.php?v=1046476571398&amp;ref=nf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Israeli protests<\/a>, only about the gleeful Israelis, happy that the Palestinian terrorists are getting their just rewards.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say that western media isn\u2019t also biased\u2014but at least in this scenario, although Palestinian rock throwers are the images that appear in several papers, and statements such as \u201cThe onus is on Hamas\u201d and \u201cIt is war to the bitter end [on Hamas]\u201d (<em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, <em>The Independent<\/em>) are <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/northern_ireland\/7804196.stm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">aplenty<\/a>, the numbers at least speak for themselves. Other \u2018western\u2019 papers have gone as far as to say Israel\u2019s actions were \u2018disproportionate,\u2019 though very few have actually condemned its actions or pointed out that <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.bignewsnetwork.com\/index.php?sid=431362\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Israel won\u2019t allow journalists into Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2270\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2270\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2270\" src=\"https:\/\/muslimahmediawatch.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/gaza3.jpg\" alt=\"A woman weeps among the rubble of her destroyed house in the Jabalia refuegee camp. Image via Mohammed Abed\/Agence France-Presse -- Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Arab media\u2019s agenda is to turn public sympathy towards Palestinians, and as we all know, TV is much more adept at tugging at people\u2019s heartstrings than mere words are.<\/p>\n<p>So on Arab TV, we are constantly bombarded by images of lamenting, wailing women and dead children. True, the women aren\u2019t the ones who are dying, but the media portrays them at those who are losing the most. Their keening wails and heartfelt emotion is stronger than the images of dead children, which unfortunately have come to resemble nothing more than movie props in gory looking stage makeup.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMen are just losing their lives,\u201d croaked one old wrinkled grandmother, wearing torn clothes dusty with rubble and splattered with what seems to be blood, huddled under a makeshift plastic tent. \u201cI have lost my sons, my sons-in-law, my grandchildren, and even my house. I\u2019ve even lost my pots and pans. I have nothing. We have nothing. It\u2019s like we are flies being swatted. Less than that even.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Palestinian women, as Egyptian journalist Amal Sorour <a href=\"http:\/\/www.egypttoday.com\/article.aspx?ArticleID=8277\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">noted<\/a> when she traveled to the territories recently \u201cbelieve in continuously giving birth in order not to become extinct, because they are always getting killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Baloosh family, who had seven daughters and two boys, prove Sorour\u2019s words correct: The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2008\/dec\/30\/israel-and-the-palestinians-middle-east\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">deaths<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/middle_east\/7804875.stm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">five of those daughters<\/a> is on every TV station.<\/p>\n<p>An Israeli bomb struck the Imad Aqil mosque at the Jabaliya refugee camp, destroying it and several buildings around it, including the Baloosh family home. The seven eldest sisters were sleeping on mattresses in one room, and five of them were killed: Tahrir, 17, Ikram 15, Samer, 13, Dina, 8 and Jawahar, 4. May God give them peace.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2264\" style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2264\" src=\"https:\/\/muslimahmediawatch.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/gaza-2.jpg\" alt=\"Family of Haya and Lama Hamdan of Beit Hanoun. Image via Khalil Hamra\/Associated Press.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Arab media is also keen to show us the huge queues outside bakeries, with women and children of all ages hoping to buy a few measly loaves.<\/p>\n<p>No mention is made of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/01\/18\/world\/middleeast\/18gaza.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hamas policewomen<\/a>, or of any woman playing any other role than the victim.<\/p>\n<p>But I can\u2019t say I really blame the media. Maybe even more than the deaths of innocent children, I feel for the mothers, who are mostly helpless. Their lives, already difficult\u2014with \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.news.com.au\/story\/0,20867,21434471-2703,00.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">honor killings<\/a>\u2018 and the numbers of battered and sexually abused women in the Gaza strip <a href=\"http:\/\/ipsnews.net\/news.asp?idnews=43206\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">spiking dramatically<\/a> ever since the siege began\u2014have become impossible. I cannot even begin to contemplate what it must be like to not be able to protect your children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is my daughter Noor\u2019s birthday on January 1,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2008\/dec\/30\/gaza\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">concludes<\/a> Palestinian journalist El-Haddad. \u201cShe will be one year old.
