\u201cDelfts blauw meets hijab\u201d is the title of a new Dutch documentary<\/a> analyzing the experience of female Dutch converts to Islam and, at the same time, exploring the compatibility (or lack of) between so-called \u201cDutch identity\u201d with \u201cMuslim values.\u201d \u00a0The documentary, created by Janina Pigaht, follows the experience of young Dutch women, Laura, Marion, Djamila, Anne-Marie and Elsa, who chose Islam in spite of an increasingly anti-Muslim sentiment in society.<\/p>\n

As the director herself says<\/a>, \u201cSometimes I think conversion is the new homosexuality. \u00a0You\u2019re better off saying at the kitchen table that you are a lesbian rather than a Muslim. \u201cTopics from hijab, to family to Dutch identity are addressed in the preview clips. \u00a0Laura, for example, in speaking about hijab, mentions that it is something she \u201calways wanted to wear\u201d and wondered what was stopping her from wearing it. \u00a0For her, it was first her parents, then her job, then \u201cthe fears [she carried in herself].\u201d<\/p>\n

Marion (the tagline to her video reads, \u201cBe who you are, and be accepted for who you are\u201d) is asked, \u201cHave you become Moroccan?\u201d \u00a0Anne-Marie\u2019s clip was the most intriguing for me as she was \u201cthe non-hijabi.\u201d \u00a0Mentioning that people judge you when you wear hijab, the narrator asks if that played a role in her not wearing it any more, to which she agreed, and then said, \u00a0\u2018It is too much of an obstacle\u2026that I felt, \u2018I can do more than you think.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In her clip, Djamila, who coordinates a women\u2019s shelter for converts called Stichting Taqwa<\/a>, touches on the idea that Dutch families are against their daughters who convert. \u00a0She said that the converts she met were \u201calways complaining\u201d about their home lives. As such, she decided to help these girls, as their website says, with temporary shelter and or mediation. \u00a0Elsa\u2019s (a UN youth representative) experience is unique in that she is a portrait of multicultural Holland: part Dominican, part Dutch and a Muslim convert.<\/p>\n
