Within that poem I believe he put his finger on something about community, authentic community and about the secret heart of spiritual community\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">They climbed on sketchy ladders towards God,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>with winch and pulley hoisted hewn rock into heaven,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>inhabited the sky with hammers,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>defied gravity,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>deified stone,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>took up God\u2019s house to meet him,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>and came down to their suppers<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">and small beer,<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">every night slept, lay with their smelly wives,<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">quarreled and cuffed the children,<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">lied, spat, sang, were happy, or unhappy,<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">and every day took to the ladders again,<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">impeded the rights of way of another summer\u2019s swallows,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>grew greyer, shakier,<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">became less inclined to fix a neighbour\u2019s roof of a fine evening,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>saw naves sprout arches, clerestories soar,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>cursed the loud fancy glaziers for their luck,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>somehow escaped the plague,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>got rheumatism,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>decided it was time to give it up,<\/span><br><span style=\"font-style: italic\">to leave the spire to others,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>stood in the crowd, well back from the vestments at the consecration,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>envied the fat bishop his warm boots,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>cocked a squint eye aloft,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br>and said, \u201cI bloody did that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/33904114-3107960238821180592?l=monkeymindonline.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Welsh poet John Ormond famously sang of building cathedrals.
