When I opened my emails this morning I learned that Kevin Osborn who among many other things is one of the Boundless Way Zen community’s web masters has created a website for our brand new Benevolent Street Zendo.

This is our ninth Boundless Way sitting group, with six in Massachusetts and one each in Maine, Connecticut and now Rhode Island. (go to the Boundless Way site for the links…)

Our project is to create a Western Zen community.

We bring together three teachers representing two different lineages, my own hybrid of Soto (through Jiyu Kennett Roshi) and Harada-Yasutani (through John Tarrant Roshi) shared with my first Dharma heir, Melissa Myozen Blacker, and that of her husband David Rynick who stands within George Bowman’s independent lineage from the Korean master Seung Sahn.

To keep it interesting all three of us also identify as Unitarian Universalists. (Interestingly, at least I find, seven of our sitting groups are housed within UU congregations…)

Our organization looks mostly like Soto with Rinzai touches and a dash of influence from the Kwan Um school. But the deeper structures also have strong UU influences, with a much flatter leadership than is usual in Western Zen communities.

The site looks great. Thanks, Kevin!

Needs a little more copy, which I suspect Kevin thinks I’ll provide.

So, more to follow, I’m sure…

How exciting!
