The writer described encountering a small <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> society following an adaptation of the rule of St Francis. I\u2019ve lost the book and have never been able to find anything else about this little band, almost certainly consumed in the fires of that second great war.<\/p>\n<p>But who they might have been, their purpose in gathering, and the work they may have taken on, all haunt me\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Today is the feast of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francis_of_Assisi\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">St Francis<\/a>, sometimes called the only Christian.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly one of the most compelling figures in world spiritual history.<\/p>\n<p>A worthy figure, I believe, for us all to remember.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a sung version of his most famous poem\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BEST SONG- CANTICLE OF THE SUN\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OGMIjwf0SVw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! All praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing.  To you, alone, Most High, do they belong.  No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him.  And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor!  Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens you have made them, precious and beautiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which you give your creatures sustenance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten the night.  He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by you, Most High, they will be crowned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic\">       Be praised, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whose embrace no living person can escape.  Woe to those who die in mortal sin!  Happy those she finds doing your most holy will.
