{"id":1961,"date":"2007-02-26T17:36:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-26T17:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/monkeymind\/2007\/02\/the-heart-sutra\/"},"modified":"2011-11-01T15:15:48","modified_gmt":"2011-11-01T19:15:48","slug":"the-heart-sutra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/monkeymind\/2007\/02\/the-heart-sutra.html","title":{"rendered":"The Heart Sutra"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_niPwTW3rBbU\/ReNj7K_GcGI\/AAAAAAAAAG4\/Na1JSO2L_SM\/s1600-h\/heart+sutra.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_niPwTW3rBbU\/ReNj7K_GcGI\/AAAAAAAAAG4\/Na1JSO2L_SM\/s400\/heart+sutra.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/a>Is one of the principal documents of the Zen way.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>To hear it chanted from a Sanskrit text <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I2Gb9ZN-61I\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">go here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>Here\u2019s an English text, the Rochester Zen Center translation based upon the work of Roshi Philip Kapleau:<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>The Bodhisattva of compassion<\/div>\n<div>from the depths of prajna wisdom<\/div>\n<div>saw the emptiness of all five skandhas<\/div>\n<div>and sundered the bonds that caused him suffering.<br>Know then:<br>Form here is only emptiness,<\/div>\n<div>emptiness only form.<\/div>\n<div>Form is no other than emptiness,<\/div>\n<div>emptiness no other than form.<\/div>\n<div>Feeling, thought, and choice, consciousness itself,<\/div>\n<div>are the same as this.<\/div>\n<div>Dharmas here are empty, all are the primal void.<\/div>\n<div>None are born or die.<\/div>\n<div>Nor are they stained or pure,<\/div>\n<div>Nor do they wax or wane.<\/div>\n<div>So in emptiness no form, no feeling,<\/div>\n<div>thought, or choice<\/div>\n<div>nor is there consciousness.<\/div>\n<div>No eye, ear, nose, tongue,<\/div>\n<div>body mind: no color, sound, smell, taste, touch,<\/div>\n<div>or what the mind takes hold of, nor even act of sensing.<\/div>\n<div>No ignorance or end of it<\/div>\n<div>nor all that comes of ignorance:<\/div>\n<div>no withering, no death, no end of them.<\/div>\n<div>Nor is there pain<\/div>\n<div>or cause of pain or cease in pain<\/div>\n<div>or noble path to lead from pain,<\/div>\n<div>Not even wisdom to attain,<\/div>\n<div>attainment too is emptiness.<\/div>\n<div>So know that the Bodhisattvaholding nothing whatever<\/div>\n<div>but dwelling in prajna wisdom<\/div>\n<div>is freed of delusive hindrance,<\/div>\n<div>rid of the fear bred by it,<\/div>\n<div>and reaches clearest Nirvana.<\/div>\n<div>All Buddhas of past and present,<\/div>\n<div>Buddhas of future time<\/div>\n<div>through faith in<\/div>\n<div>Prajnaparamita wisdom<\/div>\n<div>come to full enlightenment.<\/div>\n<div>Know, then, the Great dharani,<\/div>\n<div>the Radiant, Peerless mantra,<\/div>\n<div>the Supreme<\/div>\n<div>Unfailing mantra,<\/div>\n<div>the Prajna Paramita,<\/div>\n<div>whose words allay all pain.<\/div>\n<div>This is the highest wisdom<\/div>\n<div>true beyond all doubt,<\/div>\n<div>know and proclaim its truth:<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>Gate\u2019<\/div>\n<div>Gate\u2019<\/div>\n<div>Paragate\u2019<\/div>\n<div>Parasamgate\u2019<\/div>\n<div>Bodhi, <\/div>\n<div>Svaha!<\/div>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/33904114-9106701139625191648?l=monkeymindonline.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is one of the principal documents of the Zen way.
