Oh, my.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty years ago today,\u00a0the 2nd of December, in 1961, the San Francisco Zen Center published the first issue of Wind Bell.<\/p>\n<p>An unsigned article from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/50years.sfzc.org\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">50years.sfzc.org<\/a> tells us:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom its humble single-sheet newsletter beginnings on December 2, 1961, prior to San Francisco Zen Center\u2019s incorporation, over the decades <em>Wind Bell<\/em> has grown into a much admired chronicle not just of Zen Center but of emerging Western <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhism<\/a>. <em>Library Journal<\/em> has praised <em>Wind Bell<\/em> as a resource containing \u201csome of the most profound and useful writings available on Zen practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnown by many readers in its semiannual incarnation, <em>Wind Bell<\/em> has varied over the decades in both publishing schedule and emphasis, but has always reemerged to express the activity of practice through Zen Center\u2019s teachings, ceremonies, community news, and daily life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a small forest of such periodicals throughout the Zen world at the explosion of convert Zen in the West. The seemed to co-arise with the first Zen centers. The they were important ephemera, including pointers on practice to vegetarian recipes, as well as the news of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Of these, few had the staying power or the depth that Wind Bell consistently offered.<\/p>\n<p>A treasure.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Wenger edited the \u201cbest of\u201d Wind Bell as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wind-Bell-Teachings-Francisco-1968-2001\/dp\/1556433816\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Wind Bell: Teachings from the San Francisco Zen Center \u2013 1968-2001.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0It is well worth checking out.<\/p>\n<p>David Chadwick\u2019s magisterial <a href=\"http:\/\/cuke.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cuke.com<\/a> has archived a great deal of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cuke.com\/pdf-2013\/wind-bell\/scans-2013-wb.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wind Bell<\/a> materials,<a href=\"http:\/\/cuke.com\/pdf-2013\/wind-bell\/wb.I.1-13pdf.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> including here<\/a> the first thirteen issues.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pHNyCAJXUXE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Sixty years.
