No doubt there were many, many good people who took up arms in defense of their homes. But, here\u2019s the hard fact. They fought, ultimately, for one thing, a particular state\u2019s right, the right to hold slaves.<\/p>\n<p>They stood with a great evil. And it is a small blessing on this world that they lost that war.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that arc of the moral universe needs bending by hands and blood and, death.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes in the smoke and the horror, and the sadness of the human heart, there are hints that things do change, sometimes, sometimes, for the better\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I understand Sherman hated the song <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marching_Through_Georgia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i><\/i><\/a><i><a href=\"\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Marching Through Georgia<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>But so many of those who fought for the Union disagreed\u2026<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EX8xdfk2JhI?fs=1\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EX8xdfk2JhI?fs=1<\/a>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/33904114-6919258257428584315?l=monkeymindonline.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On this day in 1864 Sherman\u2019s army burned Atlanta as he began the march to the sea, a campaign that would set the stage for the end of the war.
