Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
SubhanAllah! \u00a0You never know when something will strike you differently. \u00a0I know surat al Kawthar and recite it fairly often. \u00a0As a mom with young kids running about I am often forced to resort to very short surahs in my prayers, and it doesn\u2019t get much shorter than this one:<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
1.\u00a0Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad ())\u00a0Al-Kauthar<\/em>\u00a0(a river in Paradise);<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
2.\u00a0Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only).<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
3.\u00a0For he who makes you angry (O Muhammad ()), \u2013 he will be cut off (from every good thing in this world and in the Hereafter).<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I recite it and go on. \u00a0But this morning, while searching for an answer to a question about the wives of the Prophet, may Allah\u2019s peace and blessings be upon him, I came across the story of his marriage to Maria al Qibtiyya and the birth and death of his son by her, Ibrahim. \u00a0Ibrahim was born healthy but passed away at around eighteen months.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cMaria gave birth to a healthy son in 9 AH, the same year that his daughter Zaynab died, and the Prophet named his new son Ibrahim, after the ancestor of both the Jews and the Christians, the Prophet from whom all the Prophets who came after him were descended. Unfortunately, when he was only eighteen months old, Ibrahim became seriously ill and died. Even though he knew that his small son would go to the Garden, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) could not help shedding some tears. When some of his Companions asked him why he was weeping, he replied, \u201cIt is my humanness.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As Ibrahim\u2019s body was being buried, the sun was eclipsed and it grew dark and gloomy. Some people thought this was connected with Ibrahim\u2019s death, but the Prophet soon clarified this. \u201cThe sun and the moon are two of Allah\u2019s signs,\u201d he said, \u201cthey are not eclipsed because of anyone\u2019s birth or death. When you see these signs, make haste to remember Allah in prayer.\u201d Although the kafirun used to mock the Prophet Muhammad because he had no sons, and say that he was \u2018cut off\u2019 , Allah made it clear in the following surah that the station of the Prophet Muhammad was far above that of any other man;<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n
<\/em><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/em>In the name of Allah, The Merciful, the Compassionate: Surely We have given you AL Khawthar, so pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice. Surely he who mocks you is the one cut off. (Quran 108:1-3)\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Reading the tafsir, the explanation, of this surah, reading it in the context of his grief over the death of his son and the taunts of the pagans of Quraish, I found myself becoming emotional, tears flooding my eyes. \u00a0I had read this surah so many times before, but only by KNOWING what I was reciting, and knowing the background, could I truly appreciate the depth of this promise that Allah, subhanahu wa ta\u2019ala, made to Muhammad, may Allah\u2019s peace and blessings be upon him.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It is a reminder to us all that it is not sufficient to simply memorize Qur\u2019an and recite it like a parrot recites what its master teaches, without understanding. \u00a0We have to learn what the Arabic means, and under what circumstances each verse was revealed. This is the only way we can truly honor Allah\u2019s Messenger, pbuh, and worship Allah in the best way. \u00a0And Allah knows best.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/8276196425188955527-848742323732654406?l=muslimahinprogress.blogspot.com\")
