Ramadan and Eid usually find Zak and I at home. The crowds make for extreme sensory overload in an environment where if he bolts, it’s hard to catch him.

But, there are many things our mosques, community centers and Muslim communities can do to help make Ramadan and Eid more autism friendly. Because, you may not realize just how many of your community members are autistic or have a loved one who is, and how they may like to be part of the communal Ramadan experience. Here are six suggestions to consider.

Next: Seek Advice from Autism Advocacy Organizations

Autism Self Advocacy Network

Ask Autistic Muslims and Other Individuals What would Help

Contact an autism advocacy organization that is operated by autistic people, such as the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), for recommendations on developing a mosque experience that welcomes autistic people. While the experiences and recommendations of parents, such as myself, can be helpful, you should start by centering autistic people’s voices and views. The next four suggestions can be good if you can’t get in touch with autistic Muslims who can offer practical suggestions.

Next: Create Social Stories to Help Autistic Congregants

Embed from Getty Images

Create Iftar, Taraweeh and Eid Prayer Social Stories

Have your mosque create “social stories” for iftar, Taraweeh, and Eid prayers. Social stories are a pictorial guide to the interactions and procedures for a given situation. It’s a little like a comic strip: It tells a story in words and pictures. If you’ve gone to a government office and not known who to talk to, if you need an appointment to do so, or you need to know what form to request to solve your problem, etc., you’ve experienced a little of what it can be like for someone with autism to enter a new situation. It’s confusing, frustrating and often overwhelming not knowing what is happening, what to expect or when things will happen.

Social stories for iftar should include when, where and how people get food, where they eat and where it is acceptable to sit. Social stories for Taraweeh should include the number of rakat the imam intends to pray, the timing of breaks and what is acceptable to do during them, etc. Eid social stories should walk the reader through takbir Eid prayer, and what is expected after the Eid khutbah.

Resources on creating social stories:

http://www.autism.org.uk/living-wit…

http://www.friendshipcircle.org/blo…

Next: Create a Quiet Room

Embed from Getty Images

Keep Sensory Sensitivities in Mind and Create a Quiet Room

For kids who can’t keep up through a whole prayer, a children’s program including a quiet area might be best. Some autistic kids can focus on a solitary activity if noise is kept to a minimum. Parents should supply the child with a favorite book or quiet activity. And neurotypical kids might like a quiet space as well. This might not work for kids who are hyperactive (ah, darling Zak), but it will help some. However, for a child prone to bolting and with a diminished sense of danger, such as an autistic child, what would normally end in the child being retrieved by a frustrated parent could end in tragedy. This probably has nothing to do with you personally.

-Some people have trouble with social boundaries and may try to hug you or get close to you before you indicate interest in such. They’ve probably been told to mind such social boundaries by parents and therapists. Politely refuse and back away if you need to, but be understanding.

– Some people don’t make eye contact. This may simply mean that they normally don’t. This may mean that they need to get used to their setting or you to make eye contact.

– Someone may need to stand a little apart from others in the prayer line. It is not a commentary on your personal hygiene. (Or is it?) Some may not understand the directive to form straight lines or not leave gaps between people.

– Someone who hums, rocks, flaps their hands, etc. is engaging in self-stimulatory behavior. This helps them tune out the sensory information that they don’t need to pay attention to, so they can focus on the things they need to focus on. It’s not something you need to focus or comment upon.

– Because of the difficulty of obtaining a diagnosis and the stigma attached to autism, someone who shows signs of autism may not be diagnosed with it or may not wish to share it with you. Don’t try to play doctor; just remember that it takes all kinds to make a world.

Next: Offer Classes to Help Teach Prayer to Autistic Muslims

Embed from Getty Images

Take Time to Teach Prayer Specifically to Neurodivergent Muslims

This will be for extra credit, but would be well worth it: Consider coordinating with a special education teacher or occupational therapist to provide classes on salah (prayer) for neurodivergent people.
