{"id":451,"date":"2011-08-26T10:23:18","date_gmt":"2011-08-26T14:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myislamiclife.wordpress.com\/?p=451"},"modified":"2011-08-26T10:23:18","modified_gmt":"2011-08-26T14:23:18","slug":"caring-for-the-neglected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/myislamiclife\/2011\/08\/26\/caring-for-the-neglected\/","title":{"rendered":"Caring for the Neglected"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Over the last month and a half, I have received messages about caring for people in our community that have been neglected. \u00a0I\u2019m not talking about those who are in need of food and shelter, I\u2019m talking about abused women and foster children.<\/p>\n<p>Do you remember Janelle? \u00a0The lady who commented in the \u201cDo You Celebrate Christmas?\u201d \u00a0We followed up with her in \u201cAdvise for Holiday Struggles\u201d \u00a0After reading through all of the comments and suggestions, I too wondered if there was more going on in her life than just a struggle around the holidays. \u00a0She seemed to be in a tug and pull situation that had less to do with her religion and more to do with being under the control of someone else. \u00a0I\u2019m not passing any judgement here, but when I came across this post yesterday on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnisaa.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Muslim Womens\u2019 Shelter in Maryland<\/a>. \u00a0I thought, I need to share this.<\/p>\n<p>In the Blog <a href=\"http:\/\/30mosques.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">30 Mosques, 30 States, 30 Days<\/a>,\u00a0Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq write about their journey during the month of Ramadan, and the people they meet, situations they encounter. \u00a0On August 25th, (<a href=\"http:\/\/30mosques.com\/2011\/08\/battered-but-not-beaten\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Day 23-Maryland\u00a0\u2018Battered But Not Beaten\u2019<\/a>) they wrote about their experience speaking to Asma Hanif, the founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnisaa.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Al-Nisaa Shelter<\/a> and some of the women who are currently living and volunteering there.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It might be the only shelter for battered Muslim women in this country. These women\u2019s stories are a painful reminder of why the Muslim community can no longer sweep the issue of domestic violence under the rug.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Inside Islamic Community, people don\u2019t talk about needing Psychological Help, they don\u2019t talk about needing help for Domestic Abuse, and they don\u2019t talk about giving up their children. \u00a0Please visit the site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnisaa.org\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Muslimat Al-Nisaa<\/a>\u00a0and spread the word. \u00a0You might not know what goes on behind closed doors, your friend or acquaintance might feel too ashamed to confide in anyone, but if you\u2019ve shared this information, she might find the strength to ask for help before it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n<p>The need for strong Muslim Families who are willing to foster Muslim children in their home is growing. \u00a0In this article by Invitation-Magazine, they address the topic of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.invitation-magazine.com\/2011\/fostering-in-islam\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fostering in Islam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Looking after a child in need or an orphan is an act that is greatly encouraged in Islam. \u00a0\u00a0However there are a lot of misconceptions about the correct practice of fostering according to Islamic principles. This timely article gives the true picture of fostering in Islam, as well as important factors to be taken account in the provision of foster-care for Muslim children\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just like domestic abuse situations, Muslim foster children are swept under the rug. \u00a0The community at large does not take responsibility for them, they don\u2019t like to think about it. \u00a0People believe that \u2018it can\u2019t happen,\u2019 because Islam is, at its core, a family centered religion. \u00a0The focus always goes back to preserving the family and the children, so there can\u2019t possibly be children who are given up or removed from their Muslim parents. \u00a0The fact is that Muslim children all over the country are being placed in non-Muslim households, where the foster parents have no idea of the Islamic practices and do little, if nothing to encourage the continuation of religious worship.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Muslim children placed in a non-Muslim foster home will inevitably be subjected to morals and behaviors that may be accepted by the non-Muslim family but not by Muslims.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After some initial research found a great need in the United Kingdom, I found this detailed article published in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infocusnews.net\/component\/option,com_magazine\/Itemid,135\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">InFocus News<\/a> about the need for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infocusnews.net\/content\/view\/16942\/135\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Muslim Foster Homes<\/a> in Southern California. \u00a0(InFocus News is\u00a0the largest Muslim newspaper in California with over 25,000 copies in circulation at each printing.)<\/p>\n<p>With the growth of Islam throughout the United States, the need for Muslim Foster Families is rising. \u00a0Spread the word.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last month and a half, I have received messages about caring for people in our community that have been neglected. \u00a0I\u2019m not talking about those who are in need of food and shelter, I\u2019m talking about abused women and foster children.
