Two nights ago, I caught the tail end of a Bizarre Foods in America episode where Andrew Zimmern<\/a> was in Detroit. \u00a0Well, since we live within driving distance of The Motor City, I have an immediate \u201cthis is my home town\u201d kinda thing and I want to know\u2026Where did he eat? \u00a0What did he do?<\/p>\n

I immediately set the DVR to record the next time the episode played. \u00a0Last night I watched it.<\/p>\n

Andrew Zimmern eats some of the funkiest foods I have never heard of, but he does it with a twinkle in his eye and a true, generous heart. \u00a0I watched as he introduced us to The Eastern Market in Detroit<\/a>. \u00a0Of course, by the end of the episode, Khaled and I had already planned on exploring this shopping destination.<\/p>\n

Andrew told us of a group of friends that formed The Detroit Mower Gang<\/a>. \u00a0 The group of friends get together during the weekends in the summer, and beautify parks in Detroit that the city no longer has the funds to care for. \u00a0They gather, mow, rehab the park and have a cookout.<\/p>\n

Still in Detroit, Andrew gets a restaurant tour of the Best of the Best in Detroit Soul Foods. \u00a0He goes to restaurants that have a good vibe about them and to die for foods right in the midst of the empty factories. \u00a0Motor City Soul Foods,\u00a0Cafe D\u2019Mongo\u2019s Speakeasy (which is a place I\u2019d love to go and visit) and\u00a0My Sisters & Me (they have the BEST cooked-from-scratch Banana Pudding according to Andrew.)<\/p>\n

Then Andrew goes to Dearborn. \u00a0Ta-Da! \u00a0If you hear someone is going to Dearborn, you KNOW they are going to mention the Middle Eastern population, Arabic foods and the Islamic Faith. \u00a0I\u2019m so excited to see good press. \u00a0SO THRILLED. \u00a0Andrew was paired with a lovely Lebanese lady (whose name I can\u2019t remember, and can\u2019t find online) who gives him a tour of \u00a0 Super Greenland Market<\/a>, a place I\u2019d never heard of, and then she takes him over to Masri Sweets<\/a>\u00a0where he tastes the cheese Ataife and cheesy Kunafa. \u00a0I watched the montage carefully, and saw that they did shoot some scenes at my favorite bakery Shatilla.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0But I don\u2019t know why they didn\u2019t try anything there. \u00a0Maybe the tour guide didn\u2019t shop there. \u00a0They finished up the segment at the home of some family friends and he joined them for an Iftar. \u00a0He mentioned briefly the significance of the Iftar, and led us to believe that it was the Eid Iftar.<\/p>\n

I am always thrilled to see the Middle Eastern population, and in particular Muslims shown in positive, mainstream television. \u00a0I knew I had to share it with you. \u00a0There are video snippets here on The Travel Channel\u2019s Video Website<\/a>, an interview about the episode here on The Hub<\/a>, and a short list of addresses to restaurants on the Fox Detroit write-up.<\/a><\/p>\n

The episode doesn\u2019t end there, but goes on to Hamtramck where Andrew and the city\u2019s Mayor, Karen Majewski, stop off at a few eateries. \u00a0One in particular served Ghost Chili pizza. \u00a0I can\u2019t even imagine.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
