I titled this \u201cmen managing the cross<\/em>\u201d because, upon observation, this seems generally to be the case when it comes to the church. Although, individually, both men and women are prone to manage the cross.<\/p>\n

W. H. Auden wrote, in The Age of Anxiety<\/em>:<\/p>\n

We would rather be ruined than changed.
\nWe would rather die in our dread
\nThan climb the cross of the present
\nAnd let out illusions die.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Not only do we do this personally. Communities do as well. Visionary thinking in the church is compounded effort to avoid the present reality of the cross.<\/p>\n
