I\u2019m not an enemy of vision. In fact, I teach business culture to university students preparing for their MBA and we talk about vision and how it is an important ingredient for success.<\/p>\n

But when it comes to building community\u2026 the kind of fellowship the earliest church was\u2026 vision will kill it faster than you can come up with a vision statement. I\u2019ve seen it happen over and over again\u2026 in small, medium and large churches.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t understand why pastors and church leaders don\u2019t try to do church without vision, even for a time. A reprieve. A cease-fire. A moratorium. Just try it!<\/p>\n

But no! They won\u2019t! Why? Because it is just soooooo cool to have a sexy vision and mission statement. They will be questioned about their non-existant mission statement.<\/p>\n

QUESTION:<\/strong> \u201cWhat\u2019s your purpose?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

ANSWER:<\/strong> \u201cUmmmmm\u2026 just to be\u2026 um\u2026 a family\u2026 just to ummmm\u2026. love each other\u2026 um\u2026 and others\u2026 ummm\u2026.<\/em> \u201d just doesn\u2019t cut it. It\u2019s bad copy!<\/p>\n

They will certainly build something. But it won\u2019t be the family they long for.<\/p>\n
