A splendor of plant life
Ancient survivors like mosses and ferns, and more modern developments like the trees and shrubs in the Acadian woods.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>

In little hidden places
\nThe red fox and rabbit only know
\nLive the tiny forest flowers.
\nMayflowers, foam flowers,
\nStar flowers, wood sorrel.
\nWood anemones
\nCarpet the floor.
\nMiniature perfections,
\nThey live in innocence
\nIn their beauty.<\/p>\n

This is Raven\u2019s kingdom.<\/p>\n

The Acadian forest
\nA fairy place
\nOf magic and mystery,
\nOf filtered sunlight and heavy rains,
\nOf gnarled roots and nurse logs,
\nOf brooks and ponds,
\nSkunk cabbage and fiddlehead,
\nOf moss and ferns.
\nA forest of many species
\nTamaracks, maples,
\nSpruce and poplar,
\nPurple finches, pine siskins,
\nMourning doves and Hummingbirds,
\nWhere moose and deer still run,
\nWhere squirrels chatter and woodpeckers drum.<\/p>\n

And Raven surveys all.<\/p>\n

Now, late July,
\nDense patches of false violet
\nLine my little trail.
\nTriliums, Ladies Slippers, Bluebead lilies
\nAre memories now
\nBunchberries show their red berries
\nMushrooms,
\nThose sulphurous underworld visitors
\nAppear
\nIn all their grotesque, intricate forms,
\nColours, shapes.
\nPatches of dusty blueberries
\nFor late summer\u2019s bears
\nThe beaver dam still holds
\nAltho its builders have moved on.
\nA lone blue heron guards the pond
\nAnd there are antlers in the undergrowth.<\/p>\n

A place of secret beauty
\nThreatened by our greed.<\/p>\n

And Raven
\nFrom the topmost spruce
\nFlings his curse \u2013
\nDamned Be
\nYe who violate
\nMy sanctuary<\/p>\n
