This past weekend CUUPS Continental held a Convo in Salem, Massachusetts \u2013 and \u2026<\/p>\n
\n
people came from all around the country<\/li>\n
we discovered a few of the amazingly diverse ways different CUUPS chapters meet and operate in different congregations<\/li>\n
we found ways to share what we knew and learn from each other<\/li>\n
we heard DYNAMITE speakers and attended kick-ass workshops<\/li>\n
we started talking about where and when the NEXT Convo might be held \u2026<\/li>\n
and we started wondering what would be added if YOU had been there?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
We heard from UU Minister (retired) Shirley Ranck, who was asked in the early 1980s to put together a curriculum on women in religion \u2026 and created *Cakes for the Queen of Heaven<\/a><\/i> \u2026 which pulled thousands\u00a0of us into both Paganism and Unitarian Universalism, and which the UUA took five years to approve.<\/p>\n*
*We heard from Byron Ballard, an Appalachian folk magic practitioner who shared wisdom about having the courage of our convictions.<\/p>\n*
*We heard from John Beckett, a former vice president of the CUUPS Board who blogs<\/a> about CUUPS, Druidry, and Paganism.<\/p>\n*
*We heard from Gypsy Ravish, longtime leader of the Temple of Nine Wells<\/a>.<\/p>\n*
We learned a lot this weekend. We learned that we CAN put on an amazing, successful conference, even if the team has to come from a two-hour radius of the conference location. We learned (again) that many hands make light work.<\/p>\n
*We met in small and large groups for a detailed look at several topics (in no particular order, honest):<\/p>\n*
\n
Prison ministry, from volunteering in person to maintaining pen-pal relationships with inmates, supporting those who have found Paganism in prison as well as longtime Pagans who find themselves inside;<\/li>\n
Daily practice for Pagans in the modern busy world;<\/li>\n
Recognizing that this is no time to stop and gawk \u2013 we need to begin to move into the post-industrial age, creating cooperative, sustainable, resilient community;<\/li>\n
Asking what our descendants are going to need from us, from our actions today;<\/li>\n
Boosting the signal of those at ground zero, bringing renewing love;<\/li>\n
Bringing peace and peaceful processes forward from ancient peaceful cultures;<\/li>\n
Bringing old magic from Appalachia, and from the British Isles where many Appalachian families came from;<\/li>\n
The integrity it takes to own the word *Witch<\/i>;<\/li>\n*
*What* *a recent CUUPS survey can tell us<\/a>about UU-Pagans and UU-Paganism \u2013 and where the work is;<\/li>\n*
*Pagan voices in UUism \u2026 and UU voices in Paganism \u2026 and how they became a book;<\/li>\n*
*Being willing to step forward and do something for its own sake, and then recognizing the larger impact it develops;<\/li>\n*
*Being willing to stand up for what\u2019s important, even when that\u2019s unpopular;<\/li>\n*
*Speaking truth to power and braving the disapproval of authorities;<\/li>\n*
*Salem \u2013 the Witch City \u2013 and how it became that;<\/li>\n*
*How to create a classroom experience that serves experienced Pagans and newcomer seekers alike;<\/li>\n*
*Land spirits, ancestors, and how you might work with them;<\/li>\n*
*Herbs and herb magic;<\/li>\n*
*Lessons of the Chambered Nautilus \u2013 for humans, for groups, for growth and change;<\/li>\n*
\u2026 and so much more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
A lot of networking went on; lots of cross-pollination of ideas and sharing of successes, failures, and learning experiences.<\/p>\n
One thing we got wrong was \u2026 YOU weren\u2019t there.<\/p>\n
Some folks weren\u2019t there because of scheduling \u2013 it was the last weekend before school started for some folks, and the first weekend after college started for other folks.<\/p>\n
Some folks weren\u2019t there because of cost \u2013 for registration, for lodging, for travel.<\/p>\n
Some folks weren\u2019t there because of job commitments, and the need to take at least one workday off for travel.<\/p>\n
Some folks weren\u2019t there because they weren\u2019t sure they were invited \u2013 maybe Convo would be \u201conly for chapter leadership,\u201d or maybe \u201conly for people who had a CUUPS chapter in their home UU congregation.\u201d Or maybe, some people thought, it might be only for people of a certain skin color or a certain marital status or a certain lifestyle.<\/p>\n
