I\u2019m going to eat healthier! I\u2019m cutting up my credit cards! I\u2019m finally quitting smoking! Are they the same resolutions you made last year? What\u2019s going to make this year any different?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/mtvpastor\/files\/2015\/01\/2015.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2450 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/mtvpastor\/files\/2015\/01\/2015-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"2015\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his groundbreaking book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Power-Habit-What-Life-Business\/dp\/081298160X\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1420120929&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=the+power+of+habit\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Power of Habit<\/a>, author Charles Duhigg talks through the Golden Rule of habit change: if you keep the same cue and the same reward, a new (better) routine can be inserted. It\u2019s what has made Alcoholics Anonymous so successful over the decades. But in his research Duhigg found that merely changing a habit isn\u2019t enough for long-term change. <strong>For lasting change, two essential things are needed: belief and community<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>And we know that habits are most malleable when the Golden Rule of habit change is applied: if we keep the same cue and same reward, a new routine can be inserted. But that\u2019s not enough. For a habit to stay changed, people must believe change is possible. And most often, that belief only emerges with the help of a group . . . Belief is essential, and it grows out of a communal experience, even if that community is only as large as two people.<\/em> (The Power of Habit, 92-93)<\/p>\n<p>Lasting change happens with belief in someone or something greater than yourself. Lasting change happens in community. That\u2019s why the driving passion of Mt Vernon church is <em>creating contagious <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">communities<\/span> of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">hope<\/span><\/em>. We can change. We can change together.
