One of those books is by Nancy Campbell of Above Rubies ‘How to Encourage Your Husband’. I think I ended up with this book in the aftermath of leaving my old church, given to me by one of my former friends that thought it would ‘help’ my marriage since in her eyes my husband leaving our old church meant that I wasn’t doing my job of wife well enough. Reading through this book now I cannot help but laugh at some of the suggestions. The book is entirely written by commenters and comments from Nancy Campbell’s website.

Marriage Changing Words

When I want to see my husband’s face glow I tell him, “Thank you.” His response is always a little smile and a questioning look on his face. “For what?” he’ll ask. I give him an answer such as…

“For the three pairs of wet panties from our potty-training two-year old.

“For the joy of hearing our six-year-old little daughter read her first words today.”

“For the total excitement of watching our son kick a goal in the game on Saturday.”

“For this beautiful home that keeps me warm while I snuggle and nurse yet another sleepy baby.”

“For working so hard today and coming home tonight.”

“For your prayers over me and our children on your lunch break. Honey I could go on and on. I have everything I have ever wanted right here, and I thank you that you let me enjoy being what God intended me to be.”

He looks at me and says, “Really?” I nod and assure him that I mean it. Really!

Our home is humble. The dishwasher, oven and stove are really old. Our cabinet doors are coming apart. The windows are not “energy efficient” because they let in whatever temperature we are trying to keep out! Everything my children and I wear comes from someone else’s closet to ours. But, my husband knows I am content. He knows I am thankful for everything I have—mostly for him and our children. He knows he is king of this earthly castle, and he is respected and adored. And despite what others called a “hopeless marriage,” we now have a marriage made in heaven. Saying “Thank you” has made a difference!

While having a good attitude in adversity and accepting situations as they are is a good thing there’s just something about all of this that seems so wrong.
