Lori is beating this dead horse/straw woman again. But we all know that she has no real idea how to manage family finances, real savings and investing. But the big point I think she’s missing here is that many women have their own money and earn their own money.

Any woman out there behaving like she’s alleging should get jobs themselves. Plus, some of the stories in the original posting on how a good frugal wife behaves are sort of horrifying. One woman turned off the house hot water heater to lower expenses. That’s taking it beyond ridiculous because there is no savings if you have to keep cutting the water heater back on to get enough hot water to do dishes and take baths. Having to go from cold to hot tank uses up a lot of energy. Can’t be good for the appliance either.

Many women today are spendthrifts. They are continually going shopping and spending money or scouring the Internet for things to buy. The average woman makes 301 trips to the store annually, spending close to 400 hours a year shopping. This amounts to 8.5 years spent shopping during a typical lifespan. They are not content with what they have and must have more and more. A friend of mine just had dinner with a man whose wife was rottenness in his bones. She didn’t like the color of the Hummer he had bought her and wanted a new one. She spent all of his hard-earned money and was never satisfied. He was a broken and miserable man. Unfortunately, these types of stories aren’t uncommon in today’s materialistic society.

There are other women who go deep into debt by going to college and taking out big loans. Then when they marry their husbands, the husbands have the added burden of trying to pay off their wives’ loans, plus these same women want expensive wedding rings. Women, this isn’t using wisdom! We don’t need an expensive college education, the latest fashions, expensive haircuts and manicures, spa days, elaborate vacations, new cars, perfectly decorated homes, eating out often (Americans now spend more money on dining out than groceries), etc. if all these mean we are dissipating our husband’s income. We must not be rottenness to their bones but strive to be virtuous women who are a crown to our husbands instead, for godliness with contentment is great gain.

There is always a happy medium ground that Lori misses, even for wives that do not work outside of the home. One of the examples Lori gives is women who get fancy hair cuts, manicures and pedicures. Around here the local cosmetology school offers those services at a fraction of what salons charge. It is possible to live between those two extremes she cites of having some of the niceties of life without paying full price. It’s not an either / or type thing. Lori simply likes to shame anyone not living like her. Mrs. Misery sure loves her company.

Here’s the other thing about her screed I find so puzzling—isn’t money brought into the family by either partner ‘Their’ money? What’s with all this unity of husband and wife but the moment money comes into play it suddenly becomes his money only? In reality it is always the family’s money no matter who earns it. Judicious spending is also the responsibility of both partners, understanding that they are working towards a goal, be it savings in general, or savings for that fancy vacation Lori is throwing shade at.

Thankfully this is not at all how most of us handle money, in either extreme. Mrs. Alexander would be foaming at the mouth right now if she was in my home because yesterday I wrote big checks for things like a new stove, new kitchen counter top and sink. Today will be laying out funds for new gutters. This is all from joint savings, but there have been times when I’ve taken my own earnings or inheritance money and spent it on the benefit of the family. The source of the money does not matter, even what you are spending it on really does not matter. It does matter than you and your partner are in agreement.

QUOTING QUIVERFULL is a regular feature of NLQ – we present the actual words of noted Quiverfull leaders, cultural enforcers and those that seek to keep women submitted to men and ask our readers: What do you think?
