This week, they asked for an article titled \u201cWhy Aren\u2019t More Christians Outraged by Sexual Harassment Scandals?\u201d, referencing the recent firing of Bill O\u2019Reilly for sexually harassing women at Fox News. I pitched them something, and they published it yesterday.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/relevantmagazine.com\/statement\/why-arent-more-christians-outraged-by-sexual-harassment-scandals\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">You can read the whole thing here<\/a>. I\u2019m a little annoyed at <em>Relevant<\/em>\u2018s habit of sanitizing my writing. They removed me quoting Trump\u2019s \u201cgrab them by the pussy\u201d line, as well as the word <em>rapacious<\/em> and various other things. But \u2026 considering my first draft included the line \u201cwomen are just supposed to be animated sex dolls that occasionally do the dishes\u201d (which I cut in later drafts, upon reflection) I may be just a little out of touch with what an evangelical audience can tolerate. Possibly. Have I mentioned lately how much I love you all for reading me even when I\u2019m horrifyingly honest?<\/p>\n<p>The comments so far have been, ehm, interesting. There\u2019s lots of lovely people saying surprisingly lovely things, and a few people who are \u2026 goddess bless them they\u2019re just so clueless.<\/p>\n<p>The semester is really close to wrapping up\u2013 my last item is due May 5, and then I have the summer off. Sticky notes for post ideas are piling up on my desk, and I\u2019m excited to get back to that. For now, I\u2019m going to enjoy a lone day off and play some <em>Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two weeks ago, the <em>Leadership Journal<\/em> ran an article written by a convicted sex offender that <a href=\"http:\/\/diannaeanderson.tumblr.com\/post\/88420545678\/on-how-the-church-discusses-abuse-denying-the\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">described his sexual abuse<\/a> of a minor as a consensual affair.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, former students of Bob Jones University <a href=\"http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/watch\/shows\/america-tonight\/articles\/2014\/6\/18\/bob-jones-universitysexualabuse.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">came forward with claims<\/a> that university administrators told students things like \u201cWe have to find the sin in your life that caused your rape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, when Bob Jones temporarily suspended a third-party investigation of their policies and actions concerning sexual violence, the decision garnered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/religion\/bob-jones-university-fires-firm-hired-to-investigate-sex-abuse\/2014\/02\/07\/d44bd3c0-903a-11e3-878e-d76656564a01_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">national attention<\/a>\u2014attention that led to articles exposing other Christian colleges with similar problems.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Education is investigating Cedarville University for possible Title IX violations.<\/p>\n<p>Victims of sexual violence at Patrick Henry College <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/116623\/sexual-assault-patrick-henry-college-gods-harvard\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">were dismissed<\/a> by the administration\u2014one was allegedly threatened with expulsion if she reported her attack to the police.<\/p>\n<p>Why does this happen?<\/p>\n<p>Why does it seem as though conservative Christian colleges might <a href=\"http:\/\/www.convergentbooks.com\/how-three-christian-colleges-sided-with-sexual-assailants\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">have a pattern<\/a> of siding with sexual predators <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xojane.com\/issues\/samantha-field-pensacola-christian-college-rape-stalking\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">over victims<\/a>?<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-pullquote field-type-text-long field-label-hidden pullquote field-multiple \">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>While most are aware of the bleak realities of physical abuse, the damage caused by emotional, verbal, spiritual, and marital sexual abuse go largely unrecognized.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>What the past few weeks have revealed is that many of us don\u2019t understand the nature of abuse\u2014or abusers. While most are aware of the bleak realities of physical abuse, the damage caused by emotional, verbal, spiritual, and marital sexual abuse go largely unrecognized.
