Here in Stockholm this fall, we in the Jewish community have enjoyed our 21st annual Jewish film festival, a klezmer concert, and a number of other cultural diversions. I choose the word “diversions” advisedly. It’s thanks to such entertainments that so many of my fellow Jews can allow themselves to say that we’re doing okay here—that there’s no need to rock the boat or cause trouble. But you know what? We are not okay, and this is not okay. http://mosaicmagazine.com/supplemental/2013/11/seeking-shelter/?utm_source=Mosaic+Daily+Email&utm_campaign=24ea0d2283-Mosaic_2013_11_18&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_0b0517b2ab-24ea0d2283-41159925 Read more

The stunning finding of Pew’s A Portrait of Jewish Americans—the most comprehensive portrait of the community in 20 years and, in the richness of its detail, perhaps of all time—is the degree to which American Jews are now choosing not to live as Jews in any real sense. Secularism has always been a potent tradition in American Jewry, but the study’s analysis of what being Jewish means to its respondents reveals just how much irreligion has taken center stage in... Read more

Belief in a Jewish return to the land has come primarily from looking to the past, not the future. http://www.patheos.com//Evangelical/Christian-Zionism-II-Gerald-McDermott-11-18-2013.html Read more

In this three-part series I will sketch the history of modern Christian Zionism (Part I) and then review its theology of land (Part II). Then I will turn to the question of the land most in dispute, the West Bank, and consider the question of whether its “occupation” is illegal. Finally, I will ask whether Christians and Jews—Zionist or not—should support the modern state of Israel (Part III). http://www.patheos.com//Evangelical/Christian-Zionism-I-Gerald-McDermott-11-15-2013.html Read more

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2007 report, Adolescent Health in the United States, surveyed 10,000 teenagers and found that the vast majority of sixteen-year olds who reported only same-sex sexual attractions reported only opposite-sex sexual attractions one year later. Because these surveys produced such unexpected results, similar studies were soon replicated all over the Western world. The outcomes were almost identical, with population-based samples now reaching into the hundreds of thousands. http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2013/11/11181/?utm_source=RTA+Carle+Therapy+Ban&utm_campaign=winstorg&utm_medium=email Read more

Women should not view professional success and loving motherhood as at odds with each other. Instead, women ought to cultivate an authentic and creative form of excellence that engages the whole person, with all her talents, in relation with others. http://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2013/11/11120/?utm_source=RTA+Miceli+Authentic+Feminine+Excellence&utm_campaign=winstorg&utm_medium=email Read more

“Pray for us,” asked a classmate from our long-ago college days who is awaiting a signal from his gay son that his artificially inseminated twins are born in Thailand. Even though I knew Dan and his wife, Jan, were strong supporters of their gay son’s wishes, I was shocked by how far they would go to pursue them. Other acquaintances of the couple were as stunned as I was. http://www.firstthings.com/onthesquare/2013/11/love-appropriate-to-form Read more
