God is not interested in just us. \u00a0He wants our kids to come into relationship with Him too.<\/p>\n
And he tells us how to enhance the possibility that that will happen. \u00a0The prescription for them is the same as the prescription He gave us for coming to love Him, and to grow in love for Him. \u00a0For all of us, the key is getting His words into us.<\/p>\n
So he tells us parents and grandparents to teach His words to our kids.<\/p>\n
V\u2019shinan\u2019tam l\u2019vanekha v\u2019dibar\u2019ta bam. \u00a0<\/em>And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall speak of them.<\/strong><\/p>\n Actually the Hebrew word that is translated \u201cteach\u201d here (\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e0\u05b7\u05df\u200e\u200f\u200e\u2013<\/span><\/span>shanan<\/i>), \u00a0means essentially to \u201cengrave.\u201d One translation renders it \u201cengrave.\u201d \u00a0Think of encouraging your kids to memorize Bible verses.<\/p>\n Then it says to \u201cspeak of\u201d those words to your children. \u00a0Here the idea is to talk about those words, and explain them. \u00a0Discuss them. \u00a0Engage in dialogue about them with your kids.<\/p>\n But when? many ask. \u00a0We\u2019re so busy!<\/p>\n The answer comes in the next part of the verse:\u00a0b\u2019shiv\u2019t\u2019kha b\u2019veitekha uv\u2019lekh\u2019t\u2019kha vaderekh uv\u2019shakh\u2019b\u2019kha uv\u2019kumekha<\/em><\/p>\n when you sit at home, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.<\/strong><\/p>\n In other words, when you\u2019re sitting around at home, when you are walking or driving (think of all the time we spend in cars!), or putting our kids to bed (the perfect time, when they are all ears and \u00a0beg us to stay), and over the breakfast table.<\/p>\n This takes planning, of course. \u00a0Maybe we bring Bible tapes or CDs (Veggie Tales?) along with us on trips. \u00a0But the point is that we parents, not the church, are to be the primary means of passing along the faith to the next generation. \u00a0And we do it by talking and talking, in sensitive ways, throughout our days.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" God is not interested in just us. \u00a0He wants our kids to come into relationship with Him too.
